Tom - World Tour!
We have just got back from visiting Cambodia for a week, an awesome country with friendly interesting people!
We took the bus about a week ago from Bangkok to the border at Poi Pet which is a bit of a poverty stricken town of mayhem and pickpockets! As soon as we crossed the border there was a torrential downpour as we negotiated the passport control gates and the buses to get our 'plush' mini bus to Siem Reap. The bus journey I can officially say was the worst I have ever been on so far traveling! The bus was covered in speed (or rust) holes and the air con was the windows but best of all was the road which was THE bumpiest dirt track from the border for 7 hours to Siem Reap, home of the temples! All part of the Cambodian experience though!
Siem Reap is the main town next to the temples of Angkor which we visited for 2 days with a guy we met from Israel, Omer. The temples were an awesome site, so much that I have to apologise for the amount of pictures! The scale was unbelievable with apparently the main temple, Angkor Wat being the largest religious building in the world. Along with the others we also got to see the temple where Tomb Raider was filmed which was covered in huge roots and mazes of tunnels and walkways.
After our 2 days in Siem Reap we headed to Phnom Penh to check out the city for a couple of days before making our way back up to Bangkok.
Phnom Penh is a busy city where poverty and wealth can be seen side by side. Its also the place where we a had a small exposure to Cambodias past as we visited the sight of the genocide in the late 70's and the S-21 prison where the Khmer Rouge carried out there imprisonment and torture of people supposedly plotting against them. Both places were shocking to see and were a taste of Cambodias past but it's also awesome to see the fast recovery of the country and resilience of the people. Our other 2 days were spent relaxing by the lake in the centre of the city playing pool and seeing some awesome sunsets with the crazy guys from our guest house.
So now we are back in Bangkok at the end of our Thailand trip for one day before heading to India for the biggest cultural experience and funky smells experience on this trip! Everyone has told us mixed stories of India but I think the bad ones you just accept as India being India! We have no plan of where to go yet so any tips post them!..... Mum where did you go again?!
