Tom C-B's Travels 2006
SATURDAY
Not much to give you about today as we were on a boat for 3 hours from 8:30am, and then transferred onto a coach for the remaining 9 hours back to Bangkok.
Maybe it was because we were back in the hustle and bustle of a city, but Bangkok felt strangely like home, and we went out for a bite to eat before gladly slipping into bed in our air-conditioned room at the Sawasdee Banglumpoo Inn.
SUNDAY
Our last full day in Bangkok was designated solely to the purpose of shopping! We got up and had breakfast in record time, before leaving Khaosan road and heading to the 'MBK' shopping centre in Siam Square. This was to take up the morning half of our shopping extravaganza, so we went at it with steely determination and some tenacious bartering. A very successful 4 hours later, we blinked in the sunlight as we stepped back outside, and took a taxi back to Khaosan road.
We dumped our shopping bags and cooled down in the room for a while before heading out once again, this time to the 'Chatuchak' weekend markets. When we got out of the taxi, we were immediately thrust into the heaving mass of people worming their way around the mazy market stalls, so with the same steely determination and gritted teeth, we got stuck in...
We emerged sometime later with more bags and less money, but were delighted at how successful our bargaining had been, so we celebrated in what we can only assume to have been 'thai-style' by eating fried insects; grasshoppers and witchety-grubs to name but a few! After our culinary extremism, we decided it was time to head for the relative calm of Khaosan road, so we hopped in another taxi and enjoyed the air-con all the way back.
When we got back we went to a nice restaurant for our last night in Bangkok and, indeed, the trip as a whole! We enjoyed the momentous occasion with fruit shakes and good food, before going back to the hotel to wait for the arrival of Harry and Izzy. They arrived at about midnight so we went out and sat with them while they refuelled after their journey of mammoth proportions. With hunger seen to, we strolled back along Khaosan road to the hotel, and agreed to meet at 10am the next morning for brekkie.
MONDAY
It was our last day of the trip, and we had meticulously planned what we had left to accomplish. Firstly, Kim had to exchange her traveller's cheques so that she could actually shop, then we took our photos and got them developed (yes - all 2,000 of them), and then we swept the Khaosan road with a fine-toothed comb for the best clothes at the best prices! This mission took us all the way to 3pm, after which we met up again with Harry and Izzy and awaited the arrival of Tasha. In the meantime we picked up our photos and had a cheeky peek, before burying them in the deep recesses of our bags, not to be seen again until we get home.
Tasha arrived and was understandably hungry (I think I'm the only person on the planet who actually likes plane food!) so we went out for an early dinner. After dinner, Kim and I excused oursleves so that we could shower and put the final touches to our packing, and we said we would meet the others in the hotel bar. The bar is in close proximity to the hotel's computers, so I thought it would be churlish of me not to give you the last, yes, the last entry of the trip before having a beer with friends...
Well, it's been good, I hope you have been able to vicariously enjoy it as much as I have physically enjoyed it, and I can't wait to be able to tell you all about it in person!
