Tom C-B's Travels 2006
Hello everybody - just a quick one to give you the lowdown on the past two days...
SUNDAY NIGHT
After updating my site, we headed off back to the hotel to freshen up and then went back out for vittles! We went to the eatery popular street called 'Fa Yuen Street' and found a small place which was full of trendy looking young people. We decided to go in and try it - it turned out it was a fast food noodle joint and very cheap, which would probably explain the age of the clientele. The setup was this: you chose your type of noodles which were then boiled in front of you. You and your bowl were then transported down the counter to the 'toppings' section. The lady serving us only knew the word 'beef' so we opted for what seemed like the safe option... It was not to be - the meat was something representing dog meat (which is probably unfair on the whole canine race!) and the soupy sauce tasted like month old cinnamon tea!! Put simply, it was one of those rare occasions where we copped it big time for being adventurous! Need I mention we were as quick out of there as we were in, with an 'Iced Tea' each in an attempt to drown the taste! Not to be deterred, we then passed a small street bakery, where we purchased several interesting looking delectable delights! This experiment turned out to be less disastrous than the previous one, and we ate most of the pastries whilst walking home, reflecting on our near death experience in the eateries of Hong Kong.
MONDAY
A stomach of iron ensured that I woke up feeling unscathed from the previous night's adventure, yet my travelling partner (Kim) was not so lucky! However, some paracetemol and a lunch date at 1pm with family friends strengthened Kim's resolve to leave the hotel, and we set off for the Marco Polo Prince Hotel in Tsim Shat Sui. We met Nobihuko and his family who took us to a stunning restaurant called 'Sweet Dynasty', famous in Hong Kong for its Chinese desserts. The meal was by far the best we had had during our time in Hong Kong, and our offer to contribute to the bill was firmly refused. Afterwards, we all went to the 'Wong Tai Sin Temple' to have our fortunes told by one of the 200 soothsayers that reside there. For a meagre $30, I was told that I was going to have good luck for the rest of the year, but that I was not to get too cocky when it was all going right! Money well spent in my book! After getting back to familiar ground, we said our farewells to Nobihuko and Co. and meandered through the bustling 'Tung Choi Street market', otherwise known as 'The Ladies Market', as all the stall owners are female! After some 'veteran-like' bartering, Kim managed to walk away with four pairs of brightly coloured shoes for $200 (roughly 15 quid!), so the market was deemed an out and out success! Dinner after our second attempt at 'Fa Yuen Street' was slightly more of a success, although Kim, now put off noodles for life, had a bowl of steamed rice which was the safest choice on the menu. Another non-stop day meant that we crashed out as soon as head hid pillow back at the hotel!
