Hello again one and all! Hope you are all well! ;)
So, Singapore...what can i say? Clean, efficient, plenty to do if you like shopping! It really is amazing as soon as arrive you realise that this place is different, everything is clearly marked and there is a bin on every corner! We took the bus over the border from KL which took about five hours and we eventually arrived about 7pm in the evening. We took a taxi to the hostel- probably the first one since we left where they agreed (in fact didn't even have to be asked!) to put the meter on and where we didn't get charged 'tourist rates'! The hotel was ok, big rooms but much more expensive than we have been used to - almost twice as much. We decided to head out for something to eat and looked for a food court- we knew from kl that you could get great food at really cheap prices in the food courts of the shopping malls, and there was plenty of shopping malls in singapore!
Then it was off to bed ready for a busy day! We got up early and decided to explore the city. We took the really good MRT (imagine the tube but clean, air conditioned, spacious and where people actually talked and smiled to each other- hard i know!) a few stops and looked around the city. There was plenty to see in the city and we did some shopping- if we'd had any money we'd would have needed a suitcase to send all the stuff back in! We did have some really good vegetarian food in china town for lunch- cheap as well which is always important to us! The afternoon was spent on Orchard Road the main riad in Singapore where we wandered about for a while- i think we walked the equivalent length of Singapore that day! For dinner we checked out little India and had a banana leaf curry (see blog from kl)- these things are amazing- someone should open a restaurant doing them in england!
Thursday we went to a small island off the south coast of Singapore called Sentosa. Its a theme park style island with its own beaches, resorts and attractions. We took the monorail acorss the causeway and went to visit the aquarium first. There was a touch pool with sharks and blue rays which was cool but the best bit was the walkway. it was over 80 metres long and we managed to see fish being fed to the sharks- they were so quick to pounce once they felt the fish although they didnt seem to see very well (brings us some hope for when we go swimming in oz!). There were also spider crabs (nearly two metres wide!)- very cool!
We decided to visit a 4D cinema ride next. You sat in a moving platform (like those flight simulators) and they moved as the film went along. It was sh*t- lasted about five minutes and it had cost us quite a bit to get in. We left the building pretending we'd had a great time though- just to get everyone who was waiting to go in next excited- just to make sure they would feel the same disappointment! Ha ha! Last we went to see a dolphin show- although they were pink dolphins which we'd never seen before. Was pretty good! We even treated ourselves to another banana leaf curry in the evening- not sure it did us that much good in the long run if you catch our drift (get it?).
Next day was our flight to Oz so we decided to kill some time. Checked out and then headed for the shopping centre to get some cheap brekkie. They had a Carrefour as well (a huge French supermarket) and we did spend some time palying the keyboards ion the toy department- Maria also became a bit if a whizz at Sonic the Hedghog before i beat her at 'Deal or no Deal' the electronic game. the fun we have eh?
We saw a cinema and decided to see a film to pass the time- called Factory Girl with Sienna miller and Guy Pearce- was quite good- i wasn't aware that sienna miller could act before this but she still found time to get her kit off as usual! Then it was time to head for the airport on a rush hour MRT with a back pack the size of Kent- those are the moments that make you wish you'd stayed at home! Before we knew we were landing in Oz- a new continent and a new country.....
