We left the adrenaline packed Queenstown and headed for somewhere a little ore serene, Milford Sounds. We arrived fiorst in a lottle town called Te Anau where we stopped for the first night. We were at a really cool camp siote which had an amazing view over a valley, right from the back of our camper van. WE planned on stopping a small free campsites for the next few days so we made the most of the kitchen and hot showers. We also made sure we filled up on feul as there wsant a etrol station for until we got back.
So next morning we began the 120km journey to Milford, where Miolford Sound begins. Before i g any further i suppose i should explain that a Sound is basically a Fiord, a glacier cut valley which has been flooded, in this case by the sea. There was plenty to see on the way up though, some beautiful mirror lakes which reflected rthe surrounding scenery. Also a site called the Chasm (¡ think Maria thought it was named after Chizz and pronounced it as such). Anyway it was a river that had cut its way through rocks ñleaving huge holes and waterfalls. Really cool but hard to explain but look at the pictures once we get them up! We gpt to Milford and had some lunch by the sea. Milford is literally a small port where cruises of the Milford Sound leave from, not very interesting, anyway we had booked a cruise for the afternoon. We were on a small boat which offered free tea, coffe and soup, rude not to have one of each eh? The cruise tokk us right down the valley which had waterfalls crahing on either side, seals resting on rocks, hanging valleys from where the glaciers had been and was generwally pretty amazing. It was raining a little and there was a bit of spray from the boat so i decided to stay in doors and let Maria do the David Bailey stuff from the front of the boat. ;)
WE arrived safely back ion land after a couple of very enjoyable hurs before looking to find somewhere to stay. We eventually aettled on a spot by a river just off the road which seemed all well and good. Weçd also done the cruise that day because we knew the weather wasnñt going to be as good the day after. We didnçt realise however that weçd be awoken in the night by howling winds and rain. It seemed as if the van was going to be blown over! We were right in a valley and so we bore the brunt of it allª We soon woke up and headed down the rad for safety! We moved to spot by a lake in the woods which was much calmer however the rin didnt stop and we were left in the middle of nowhereto endure the weather in a tiny cramped van, oh the fun! When there was finally a break at about 3 o clock we quickly headed out to a local waterfall to have a walk. Unfortunately the rain didnt hold off for long and we were soon back in the van watching a few eposides of Prison Break.
Next day we planned on doing a walk before we headed out of the area and so we choose an easy one and set off. it was nice to stretch the legs after the day before and the walk through the woods was really nice. WE then headed off for our nect stop...
Milford was a really beautiful place and weould recommend anyone going thereª
