Tom, Day I don't really know.....
Hello from Kazan! We're here just before the ural mountains, and have been here for two nights already. Actually we only just made it here by the skin of our teeth, before getting the train from Nizhny Novgorod Chloe stopped into a supermarket to get some water... 20 min later she came out after "having a bit of a look around" and we went into the station, couldn't find the platform and were litterally running from platform to platform looking for the train, and only managed to find it because a kindly russian guy pointed towards the right platform and shoued something unintelligable at us. We ran on to the tran litterally a few seconds before it left, littearlly soaked with sweat (literally in my case, having carried both mine and Chloe's bags!) to be greeted with the moodiest provodnista (carrage attendant lady) we've met so far. So it's with some nervousness that tonight we're setting off on a 30 hour(!) train trip from here to Tobolsk, where we'll arrive at 2 in the morning and sleep in the station! But I'm sure it'll be great fun! Actually, adding to the joy it's just started to pour with rain and thunder AGAIN as I've been writing! Weather has been very tempremantal in Россия!
But things are good, we've now actually got all of our tickets between here and Beijing, which is very exciting! The whole train system initally seemed quite intriguing, but having been stuck in it you realise how stupid it really is!
So, for a bit of an update on that least few days: In Moscow we were mostly tied up with getting either train tickets or visa registration, but we did get to go into the Kremlin, see Red Square, Lenin's mausoleum (from the outside, the police closed it early for no reason), st Basil's Cathedreal, the All Russia Exibition Park, and on a river cruse, so we ticked off nearly all 25 of Rough Guides thiungs to do! We then went to Nizhny Nowgorod, which we'll tell you about next time as we've run out of internat time!
We won't be able to write for a while as we're going to be on and off trains without staying in one place now for the next 5 days! Wish us luck in the plaskartny (cheapest, 54 people in a carrage) train!
Lots of love x x
