Ah, the lovely Wilsons Prom! We arrived here around midday on the 29th Feb. Weather on the way in was cloudy with moderately strong easterly winds. We fetched up at Tidal river Caravan park and nabbed a nice sheltered spot on the beach side of the park. The boys were very excited to see that there was an open air cinema and that it was playing TinTin that night. Tom and I were interested to see that in the last few years the elements have been decidedly unkind to the Prom. First up were several major fires in 2005 and 2008. Then last year they copped an absolute pasting in the form of a major flood which caused landslides all over the park and washed out the bridge at Darby River effectively stranding 250 campers who had to be airlifted out. There has been a tremendous effort ever since to rehabilitate the walking tracks but still everywhere you went there was clear evidence of the devastation wreaked by the water.
We wasted no time and after lunch, tackled the track from Tidal River to Squeaky Beach. At 2.5 km return, we felt that it was manageable distance for two small boys who had been cooped up in the car for a couple of hours. There were some impressive washout scars and realigned track sections. The path took us past the infamous whale rock and around the spectacular rock formations for which the area is well known see following photos.
The weather was rotten the next day, so we got stuck into Ned's school work. Me and the boys ventured out into the howling easterly and driving rain in our wetties and ran around the vast sand arena of Norman Beach. We lasted about 15 minutes and then it just got too cold. Good excuse for a rare, hot shower!
