Today is our last day in Beijing. We've packed a LOT of sightseeing into the last few days.... the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Great Wall, amongst the highlights! We have about a million pictures of chinese buildings - not sure we're going to be able to remember what they all are when we finally get them uploaded!
The day at the wall was probably our favourite so far. We set off at 6.30am for the three hour journey to the section of the wall that we were going to hike. It was a gorgeous day - probably about zero, but beautiful blue skies and bright sun (we're not sure that there really is any bad weather, as we seem not to have seen any of it!). The walk took about four hours, the section of wall included some that has been rebuilt but there were also lots of sections which looked very old and crumbly and we're not sure quite how safe some of it was! Some of it was pretty steep and quite hard going, but the views were well worth it (we took about 60 photos!). At the end of the section of wall we were hiking there was a zip wire over a river that took you to the bottom of the hill. Dan persuaded me we should do it and for some unknown reason I agreed - but it was great fun and actually not scary at all as it didn't go that fast!
We're leaving for Hong Kong tomorrow and will be sad to leave Beijing, we have really enjoyed it here. Our hostel is on a great little street with lots of cafes, restaurants, bars and boutiques - very Brick Lane. The bars are definitely going for that Shoreditch undecorated look - but very trendy.
We'll update in a few days from Hong Kong. It's Chinese New Year on 7th and there is going to be a big firework display in Hong Kong Harbour on New Years Eve, so we're looking forward to that. And then to Macao for a couple of days, where the biggest casino in the World is!
