Another ten days have passed and we are now well and truly into our travels. Sihanoukville was a perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun but then it was on to learn a bit more about Cambodia than you can learn from a sun lounger. We headed back to Phnom Penh for what proved to be a fascinating 24 hours there. We went and visited the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek which was shockingly fascinating. Being neither historians or old enough to actually remember we knew very little about the Khmer Rouge or their attrocities when we left that morning but by the end of the day we had both learnt more than we wanted to. The actual tour was done using an audio tour which we were both a bit sceptical of, however, it was easily the most powerful site we have visited because of the commentary we listened to. The afternoon wasn't full of joy either as we headed to S-21, the prison which housed the inmates before they went to the killing fields. Fate would have it that we were of course stuck in a thunder storm whilst in the prison. In fact not just any thunderstorm, by the time we left (mid storm) there was 2 or 3 feet of water in the road by our hostel which the locals loved having a swim in but we weren't so keen on! Wading was in order as the tuk tuk driver mimed his engine flooding and refused to go any further.
The next day was our 3rd country of the trip so far as we went into Vietnam. Much more successful than our crossing into Cambodia; Vietnam even has the luxury of uniformed immigration officals rather than just a man with a passport stamper. First stop in Vietnam was Ho Chi Minh City which was just a sea of choas really. We visited the tunnels Cu Chi which was a fun trip. The tunnels themselves are unbelievably small, and there were some really great exhibits about the various traps the Viet Cong used as well as the guns both sides used. Our day ended with a trip to the War Remnants Museum which for 50p was really good, our particualr highlight was a photo exhibition called 'Requiem' which was photos of the Vietnam War and consequences.
To finish that day we hopped on our first 'sleeper bus'. One of the weirder contraptions we have ever seen, a mix of the night bus from Harry Potter with a prep school dormitory. Sleeping above the engine proved slightly loud, but this took us back to the beach so all was well!!
We have now been in Nha Trang 4 nights and we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Most days have been very chilled out on the beach, bummping into a few friends from Marlborough and Highfield. On Friday evening we had a lovely drink on the beach to toast Bomma and many fantastic memories.
One thing we should tell you about is the waterpark we went to yesterday. It is essentially every child's paradise; set on its own island there was a theme park, water park, aquarium and amusement arcade all rolled into one. As well as a (very fake) perfect beach. There were so few people there it genuinely felt like we had rented it all to ourselves.
Anyway, we must leave the beach and next stop is Hoi An further up the coastline. We hope you are all well. Home one month today xx
