FIRST of all: a huge apology to you since it wasn,t my intention to send automatic updates to my whole contact list! I just found out that,s happenning. I'll turn that off and if you want to see the latest, come on by.
A wintery storm pretty much terminated the last two days of the trek through the alps so we fast tracked to Zermatt. Cold, no problem, but snow and ice, no.
We left the Haute Route at Gruben, Switzerland. A little hamlet that is accessed only by foot and the occassional car. Guess which one we used?
To get there we hiked down the mountain from a historic hotel we stayed at about 2300m very much about the tree line. It was build in 1885 and it's pretty much the same---which was really excellent. It was reward after a demanding 4.5hrs up the mountain. So let's say the dinner and shower were an amazing reward.
The hike down from that hotel to Gruben was rainy and then as we neared the Meidenpass (the pass we needed to cross to get to the next town) wind was whipping up ice pellets and snow with wind chills well below freezing. This was NOT planned for. We hustled down the mountain to the tiny hamlet of Gruben.
All I know is I'm coming back to Zermatt in the winter because this is a serious winter sport and mountaineering town. We're going up the Matterhorn tomorrow. This time by rail.
Our group broke up in Brig, Switzerland and most wanted to seek out warmer areas! For me, it's back down to Italy and the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera Friday or Saturday.
The photo here is the Matterhorn view IF it weren't all foggy and rainy like right now.
