Sunday must be the day for English programs on dutch television. Usually we're lucky to get one program in English with dutch subtitles, but today there were only two on the eleven channels we get. I also came across the most random programs while flipping through the channels. One channel was a program about boy and girl scouts with such thick Irish accents, that I had to rely on the dutch subtitles to understand what they were saying. Another showed a woman in a hospital bed threatening to call the police on a man because he was dishonest with her (really?). The most hilarious and equally frustrating was a hockey game. At first I was really excited that there was finally a sport (other than soccer) that I loved watching, but after watching for only a few minutes I realized that I could have played better than these 'professional' dutch teams, and I can hardly skate. My emotions went from ecstatic to laughing at their lack of comprehension of the sport to extreme frustration. Needless to say, I settled on watching "Recess" in Dutch.
I don't mean to be immodest, but I am becoming impressive. Please let me explain. Every night before I go to bed, I read over the lectures that I've studied earlier in the week or day and then explain the laws and processes in my own words while getting ready for bed. I realize this sounds incredibly nerdy, but sometimes sentences come out of my mouth that are so scientific that I hardly understand myself. I'm sure that any person who has taken university chemistry or physics classes would think my opinion of genius sentences is actually rookie talk (ahem Paul), but I'm quite impressed with my learning. If only I could remember Dutch vocabulary and pronunciations this well.
