So on Wednesday morning I took the Stray bus to go to Paihia, on the bus were 8 other people, most of them English and one Dutch guy. Our bus driver's name is Muesli, yes, like the breakfast. He drove us all the way to Paihia and checked us in at the base hostel over here. It is a nice hostel I am in the room with Chris and Neil who are English and with Sebastiaan, the Dutch guy. On the way here, we stopped several times. We saw the famous kaori trees (if that is their name), which are super big! We had a couple of drinks in the bar in the evening but went to bed rather early. The next day we did a tour to go to Cape Reigna, the most Northern part of New Zealand. At Cape Reigna two seas come together. The landscapes were absolutely amazing. The grass is super green over here and there are sheep and cows everywhere. It is just beautiful! The bus also drove on Ninty mile beach, which is an official highway here. It is really cool, the sand on the beach is obviously rather hard, so you do not need 4WD. The beach ends in big sand dunes where we had the opportunity to go sand boarding again. Super fun! We did get a little bit wet though because at the end of the dune there was a small stream, so if you went too fast, which most of us did, you would continue cruising down the little creek. Luckily I brought a change of clothes!
After another evening at the bar, though not too long, we went on a cruise of the bay of islands in the morning. It was rather interesting, since the skipper gave us lots of information about all the islands and we went to a rock formation which is called 'the hole in the rock' It is basically a rock with a big hole in it through which the entire boat could fit. On days when the water is really calm they actually go through it, but today the sea was a bit too rough. The cruise is also a dolphin cruise, unfortunately we didn't see any. The boat dropped us of at Russel, a small town a very short ferry ride away from Paihia. It has the oldest church in the country that is still being used as such. We walked around a bit but then took the ferry back to Paihia and we chilled in the hostel for a bit. Because we didn't see any dolphins we got a ticket to go again on another day.
Yesterday we went hiking or 'tramping' as the kiwis call it. It took us about 4 hours to walk to and back from the hostel to Hakuru falls. It was a great walk, but we were super tired at the end of it. Nevertheless we had a great night at the bar! This morning Neil, Sebastian and I decided to go for our second dolphin cruise, Chris couldn't be bothered to get up because it was really cloudy. His loss, because we saw 5 or 6 dolphins cruising along with the boat, doing crazy jumps and playing with each other. It was super cool! This afternoon Neil and I are just chilling at the hostel, catching up on that lost hour of sleep because we went to summer time last night. Sebastian and Chris were going back to Auckland. We'll see them there tomorrow because that is when we'll take the bus back. On Friday we are going to go from Auckland to Raglan. Peace out!
