Just when we thought our trip couldn't get any better, in my view this experience was out of this world! A colony of Northern Royal Albatross can be found on the cliffs of the Otago Peninsular - the only mainland colony in the world. Monarch boat trips offer a 45 minute cruise to view the Albatross and other wildlife when possible. They pick you up from Wellers Rock- we drove there from the castle, not without difficulties! Much of the road was under repair due to massive landslides following torrential rains in June- despite this, they have managed to keep the road open but it was a slow drive. Once there, the heavens opened and not another soul was to be seen anywhere. We persevered as we were keen to do the boat trip having come this far. As promised in their brochures, the boat pulled up at 2.30 pm, and fortunately the weather cleared. One other couple, from Sydney, joined us and with binoculars and warm weatherproof coats provided we were off. What an experience - 3 different types of Albatross entertained us and we enjoyed great running commentary from the skipper, expertise from the guide on board, and unique photo shoots, one of which I have included here. A marvellous hour I will never forget.
