Ho Chi Minh (or Sai Gon as the locals still call it) has been a bit of a write-off, in between illness and drunkeness we haven't really managed to see much!
Yesterday we went to see Twilight at the Galaxy cinema as it was pouring with rain (spent the first half hr watching Vietnamese trailers, hoping the film wasn't dubbed!). Robin thoroughly enjoyed the film and now wants to read all the books and see the other films, he wont stop talking about it...only joking, he nearly fell asleep and told me in no uncertain terms that I now 'owe him' (which will undoubtedly be a night on the beer, watching football!).
We were planning a trip to the Mekong Delta today, however, last night we stumbled upon a little street bar with tiny tiny plastic chairs where they sold Bia Hoi (fresh beer, only good for 24hrs). The place was rammed but the owners found a spot for us and we proceeded to drink the bia. We then met a guy from Yorkshire called Steve, he'd previously lived in Sai Gon so knew the area and the locals, which made for a very interesting evening.
The bar consisted of a beer pump, a woman serving and her 80 year old mother who basically acted as bouncer, and frankly, you wouldn't mess with her! At a couple of points in the evening the old lady started pulling confused people off their chairs, and stacking them up in the bar. Steve informed us that this was because the police were coming (the bar at the end of the road would ring to warn other bars) and people weren't allowed to be sitting in the road or the police would 'arrest the chairs'!
We were in the bar straight through dinner so we ended up eating some random bar snacks from the passing street sellers to keep us going - boiled monkey nuts, quails eggs dipped in salt (10 for 50p), lychees and huge rice cracker things, all very nice.
We also meet a Dutch guy and a local called Hip Hop (!) who Robin got on pretty well with, and who gave me his email address- still don't get why locals keep giving me their contact details!
14 pints later we had a bar bill of...wait for it...under £3! A - ma - zing!
On the way home we went for Pho (noodle soup) which was yum, and first and only Vietnamese food I've eaten so far.
Today we spent a day looking around Sai Gon to kill time until our bus at 8pm. It started pouring with rain again when we were by the cinema so we went in to watch another film, unfortunately all they had in English was Puss in Boots which was god awful.
The traffic here is mental. There are tons of mopeds which run lights, drive on the wrong side of the road and on the pavement, you can't get away from them. Looking forward to getting somewhere more quiet.
They also have tons of Xmas decorations up here, they apparently celebrate it more here than Cambodia, although still doesn't feel like Xmas.
We got the sleeper bus in the evening to Nha Trang, it's basically a bus with lots of tiny bunk beds. It's relatively comfortable but I didn't sleep at all. Also got bitten to death by Mosquitos again - Tina 12, Robin 0, seriously I must taste amazing as the Mosquitos go for me despite wearing the strongest Deet possible and long trousers and Robin does neither. I love these bus journeys!
