Hey im back again. I ll start with apologising for the lack of updates. Anyway Wellington. We spent 3 nights in the capital city. As we arrived in Wellington the sun was out and not a cloud in the sky. We arrived at our hostel which struck me as a refurbished prison with high ceilings and small windows about 8ft high. It was nice enough just a little different.
The first day we rose about 10 and headed for "The Museum of New Zealand" called Te Papa's. Its a huge museum with different levels representing different era's in New Zealands history. Im not too much of a museum person but walking around and taking in some of the history and culture was cool. I spent most of my time taking photos of all the small Maori figures and all the old huts they lived in. After spending a few hours there we headed for our hostel and some tea. That evening Joe and I found a cheap bar to chill out in and eventually made our way back about 10 pm.
The next morning we headed for the city centre - i had just found out that i needed a medical check up and tests in order to get my work visa. It was going to be another 150 pounds so i wasnt happy. We got to teh city and strolled through the main high street. We got to the parlimentary buildings at the other end of the city centre. We booked ourselves in for a free tour. The tour started with a video of the history of the building and what happened within the building. The tour took us in the rooms that are used for public debates, these rooms were furnished with traditional maori paintings and crafts - this represents the history and tradtion of New Zealand. We then made our way down to the cellars where giant shock absobers had been installed to avoid damage in the event of earthquakes. We entered the debating chambers (what would be the house of commons) - then made our way into all the conference rooms etc. It was a good tour - although i was lost with some of the things they were saying.
That night we entered a free poker tournement in the same bar me and Joe had been in the previous night. After a long night sat about listening to a load of "big time" poker players apparently i finished up 3rd and one place short of a free bar tab. Gutted! There were 62 people enter so i was happy with 3rd mind.
The next morning was raining and we made an early start as we had a ferry to catch to Picton - and the south island. I ll do another entry for that though
