Low and behold, standing next to us collecting his luggage at Bariloche airport, is the Canadian photographer from El Chalten! So we decided to grab a bite to eat and chat a bit more about his and our travels.
We decided the best way to view 7 lakes is by car...no more marathons on foot! This seems to be the most popular thing to do, coz we spent all afternoon walking from one end of the town to the other trying to hire a vehicle for the next day, finally we organize a car at 8:30pm, and we're off the next beautiful windless morning :)
Unfortunately for the tourism industry, a volcano North of Bariloche (on the Chilean side) has been spewing ash for the last couple months and the mountains and lakes had been covered in thick layer of ash - so thick the lakes look like sand pits when there are no waves. There was a huge clean up effort in Dec sometime and still only on windless days can you see the other side of the lake. In fact we caught the first flight into Bariloche airport since the initial eruptions. The vistas ( 350 kms round trip) around the area were really beautiful with high jagged mountains sinking into deep crystal clear (and freezing) water, when close enough we could see trout and salmon swimming around!
