We were expecting a place bustling like new York, people shouting at you in foreign language like Hong kong, and swiping you blind like... Egypt. Instead we're have been pleasantly surprised! Here the long arm of the law obviously belongs to a midget (a little bit longer than gammie's arm say) - not too much happens while people Jwalk, stroll along the streets and malls in nothing but baggies and flip flops, bath and wash clothes in the national fountain. My personal favorite was the street bum who swung his arm around a tourist and smiled toothlessly for the kodak moment and then just strolled away. Even though they have a laced policing system there is very little litter.
The heart of the city has loads of old colonial buildings, some restored and some not restored but still in use! The people here are so cosmopolitan, we're battling to pick out the tourists from the locals.
So our first day we did the usual walk around the city (+-8km, 5km on day 2! That's why I'm allowed to pack 3 pairs of shoes coz they gonna wear out! And a straighter and hairdryer) and strolled past a cafe which had people tango dancing on the sidewalk. We were so thrilled and stood there toting our camera's and clicking faster than the jap standing next to me when I was hauled up onto sidewalk and whisked and whipped around - my arms and legs sprawlled all over. My latino dark haired mucho companion kept in perfect check and stern face the whole way through - he was also only yay high ( thats about just under my armpit- don't worry I saved you all from these photos).
On day 2's hike we did not expect to find a large dam in the centre of the city which seems to be all the rage on a Sunday avi. Bikes, roller skates and rollerblades with lollipops are the order of the day. We when in Rome... Yes We did! We went roller blading- was a bit wobbly at first but joined the anti clockwise pace around the dam in a few short minutes! Was such fun! We also noted alot of people running with their dogs. For such a hot place (approx 34degrees at night and 38 during the day) I can't believe the number of wooly woogles! ( dogs coz Tim says this makes no sense to non-deane people) The poor things need to be thrown in the dam after a lap.
That's your intro.. Ta-da! This morning we spent about 2 hours with a very sweet smiley travel agent trying to communicate and organise our trip across to Uruguay. So here we are on a boat to Montevideo..we hope:)
