We spent a couple days in Cape Town. Walked all the way along Long Street, picked up our malaria medicine at a clinic, had lunch on the waterfront, then went to the South Africa national museum. Very good photography exhibit with a few award winning shots by kids (11-14 yr old category and 10 and under). Walked through the Company Gardens, originally used to grow food for the ships passing through on the way to and from India.
Next day we took the boat to Robben Island, used as a prison almost from the time the Dutch first arrived (first prisoner was a native African, they thought they could just put him on the island and he would not be able to get off, with no boat experience- he escaped). Saw Nelson Mandela's small 2x3 meter cell, tour was led by a former political prisoner held there for 5 years for catch-all crime of sabotage. Also
Saw the district 6 museum commemorating a whole neighborhood torn down after the use was changed to white only, everyone living there was kicked out in the 60's.
Yesterday we got our rental car, packed in and drove south to Simons Town, stayed on Boulders Beach where a colony of African penguins lives, walked around and swam in the ocean with them.
