Breakfast was complimentary at the hotel and had a range of food from scrambled eggs and ham, scones, muffins, bagels, and toast, fresh fruit, cereals, oatmeal and yogurt, juice and coffee, and "make yourself waffles". I made us a waffle and smothered them with blueberries, strawberry conserve, and fresh bananas. The fruit was the healthy option in our breakfast!
We sat down for lunch to try the local cuisine. Pulled pork sandwich, fried catfish, red beans, coleslaw and chips. No salad option was offered on this lunchtime menu for tourists on the Memphis City Tour. Size portions are huge, drinks are huge, and the people eating in this bar/cafe on Beale Street Memphis are also huge! Distinctive bbq taste to the pork and not to my liking, but the beans and the catfish were good.
The evening meal we chose BBQ pork ribs, a Memphis specialty, but only half a rack between the two of us for $15.95. The waiter was surprised at our order and that we were sharing, perhaps it was because most folk in Blues City Cafe were ordering a full rack for themselves! The ribs were great, tender and full of flavor. Two meals in one day meant there was no room for sweets, bread puddings looked like the favorite here, which was a shame.
Food, conversation, music, drinks - this was part of experiencing Memphis. We are beginning to feel like we are eating our way around the USA. Perhaps salads will be on the menus at Nashville?
