Long, long day of travelling. One water taxi, two old US school buses, one shuttle bus, one border crossing and a brief bus crash. Finally reached Flores, a little island in the middle of a lake, in the north of Guatamala.
Had our tea at a local taco stall....well good....tortillas with all manner of goodness in them.
In the morning, we headed for the ancient delights of Tikal which was built by the Mayans around 700 BC and boasts some pretty cool pyramids and plazas in the middle of the jungle surrounded by the sounds of howler monkeys everywhere.
Spent the day exploring, even managed to overcome our new fear of heights and climbed one of the temples for a pretty sweet view where we scoffed our sarnies.
And we even carried out a funny little ceremony to the Mayans after meeting a dreadlocked hippie who told us we would recieve guidance and wisdom if we made a little offering to the Gods. Cue me and Tim feeling somewhat foolish laying down flowers on top of a pyramid and muttering wishes to the Mayan gods!
Spotted howler monkeys, lots of cool birds although no toucans, and got totally freaked out when a cheeky taiper (kind of a cross between a monkey and a racoon) bounded towards us leaving us fond animal-lovers preparing to batter it with our camera!
Fully ruined, we hopped on board our next shuttle for the 8 hour slog to the famous limestone pools of Semuc Champey.....
