Another beautiful colonial town, this time surrounded by active volcanoes on two sides! Lots of exploring, lots of poking around markets and obviously lots of shopping to be had.
Had a bit of a mare trying to find accomodation because it was the weekend, but finally after a good few hours of 'exploration' we stumbled across a lovely little courtyard hostel through the back of a doughnut shop. Perfect.
Met up with our new friends Ian and Sue for a classic curry Guatamalan style and a round of mojitos in the Frida bar (she's the famous artist with a massive monobrow and tache, incase you wondered) and had a fab sushi meal romantic style-like for Valentine's Day.
Then poor Tim got sick again and was losing it from both ends, so after another very random trip to the non-English speaking quack, it was back in bed for him.
Meanwhile, whilst not performing my very best impression of Florence Nightingale, I headed down to O'Reillys Irish bar for a pot of stew and pint over the Sunday evening quiz. Actually I was very brave and managed to make friends and influence people despite it being the first time in almost 2 years that I was alone without Mr Whitby!! Scary stuff indeed.
Infact, I even managed to build a whole quiz team of the most eclectic characters, including an old American chap called Hap, a genetically short guy from Texas, his ironically tall best friend and two others, who I believe, were called Bill and Ted. Most excellent.
And thanks to my fellow team-mates limited social adventures, we even managed to win a round of tequila shots for scoring a perfect 10 on the comicbook super hero round. But most impressive of all...we came a grand second place!! Oh yeah!
Other activities in Antigua included hiking up the active volcano to see the lava, but a series of unfortunate events left our volcano wishes unfulfilled. These included: Tim's active bowels and personal lava flows, his complete lack of footwear except flip-flops, the state of Sue's knees after taking a tumble, rain, fog, and a thorough contempt for trekking around in the dark for an hour!
Also watched a random street parade to mark the start of the Easter festivities with much chanting, smoke billowing and lots of straining young men carrying a huge float thing with a statue of the Virgin Mary on top!
On our last day, we did some more milling about before a leisurely lie in the park to watch the world go by.....
