Arrived in Cambodia after a mammoth boat journey across the border. Cambodia is much flatter countryside compared to Vietnam and much much hotter! It is also the poorest country we have travelled to on our trip so far, with lots of kids begging and selling stuff, which is quite hard to see. But at the same time Phnom Phen is a really friendly place and everyone says hello and waves. On saturday we went to a proper Hugh Heffner style pool party in a beautiful house with posh gardens......celebrated our safe arrival in a new country with plenty of super strong passion fruit cocktails before ending up in the water in all our clothes! We are just soooo rock 'n' roll!!
Today we caught a tuk tuk to The Killing Fields which was a fairly sobering experience with over 100 mass graves and over 8500 skulls in a memorial in the middle of the field. On the way back, (in between the tuk tuk breaking down in the middle of nowhere and waiting to have a new front tyre fitted) we also stopped at the Grand Palace and Silver Pagoda in the town. Phnom Pehn is a strange place in that although it has obvious poverty, the city is modern and for tourists with a little money....you can get anything you are missing from home more easily than in other parts of south east asia. So...needless to say, we took full advantage and have had plenty of marmite, baked beans (yes, heinz!), and weetabix in various combinations. Heading to the main attraction, Ankor Wat, and about a 6 hours bus ride tomorrow, all good fun.
