So after nearly a month livin it up in Buenos Aires we now count ourselves as honorary portenos - people who live in BA!! And its scary how quickly we slipped back into our slack-arsed lives we were vegged into front of the sofa eating a chinese takeway within 6 hours of getting the keys!!
Palermo is a really cool neighbourhood with tree lined cobbley streets and a huge park with lakes and stuff....plus it where all the uber trendy bars and restaurants are, so just to make a change we have spent A LOT of time going out and stuffing our faces!! Fav feeds so far include an amazing Thai restaurant, Scandanavian vodka brunch, spicy curry in a faux colonial style wicker-y pub and plenty of traditional Parilla action....although we have yet to be brave enough to tuck into the inside which they are sooo very fond of!
On our first full day in the city, we hopped on a local bus to another area called San Telmo to check out the famous antiques market and watch the free tango shows in the street. It was fab....spent the morning pottering around people watching some slightly crazy local characters and tucking into giant empanadas!
Later we walked for hours through the city....admired the very phallic Obelisco....and onward to Recolata Market - a huge Argentinian handicraft fair - and chilled with the locals listening to bands on the grass....before watching the sunset in Palermo woods tucking into a very traditional choripan - basically a very fat sausage sandwich!! Hmmmm....perfecto!
Spent an afternoon wandering round the Recoleta Cemetary which is amazing.....its like a little town of massive ornate tombs with doors and windows but with coffins inside...all very impressive but a touch creepy especially with loads of stray black cats padding about behind you everywhere! Followed our little map - which we bought off a very odd character who spoke in a really affected British accent, claimed she owned 40,000 t-shirts and insisted on calling us collective 'London'....to the top tomb attraction...Evitas grave...along with a bunch of super excited Argentinians!
Fancied ourselves as art lovers one morning and visited the MALBA Modern Art Museum which was pretty cool....especially with the photo exhibition of celebs....including naked pics of Naomi Campbell and Pamela Anderson...which Tim was more than happy enough to critique at length!!
We have spent the first couple of weeks hanging out with fellow travellers who we have bumped into along the way including bizarrely Sue who we first met on the Trans-Siberian train almost a year ago!! Had a few mentalist nights out.....they don't eat until at least 11pm and then arrive at bars from 2am onwards.....our bodyclocks are thoroughly ruined!
Headed out one night with a bunch of friends including some Argentinians to a club called the Roxy where the band didn't even come on stage until 4am....before eating our breakfast in a packed McDonalds at 6.30am surrounded by partiers including randomly a girl in a full-on cow costume with udders!!! Very surreal! Our latest, or should I say earliest, night was a crazed night in an all-you-can-drink gay super club called Amerika where we danced with sweaty fat men sporting massive blonde wigs and even more massive boobs.....top notch!!
And we went back to skool....spent the last three weeks back at spanish classes every morning for a mind-numbing four hours learning, or attempting to learn, spanish for the rest of our travels.....not quite native speakers yet but getting there.....Chau for now!!!xx
