14-12-06 FIRST DAY IN S.AMERICA - LIMA, PERU Got here about 6am, and already in my taxi ride over to the hostel, the streets were stupidly busy. The taxi ride itself was defiantely a journey to remember. in Peru, most of the main highways have 3 lanes, same as the UK ones, only difference is, they squeeze 4,5 or even 6 out of them, so your travelling down a road at 60mph within a fingers length of the car next to you, then the taxi driver would suddenly change lanes and pull infront of a bus or something. scary stuff! but i arrived at the hostel in one piece, so got to my room, showered then fell asleep on my bed. benefit here was i was in a room woth 10beds, but i was the only person there. so i had my own private room, with 10 beds to choose from. anyway, something i forgot to mention at this point it that i am s*** scared....why?...because i speak hardly any spanish, and they speak hardly any english! so i spent the rest of that day just messing about on the net, and trying to sort out what i was going to do for the remainder of my S.American Trip. i have three months here, and then fly out from Santiago in Chile on the 10th March, which seems like an eternity away. So all the time i was in Lima, if im honest i didnt really feel like going out too much. i made a trip into a local district the next day to pick up a phrase book, which gave me enough basic knowledge to get myself into the centre of lima the next day to the main square and back again in one piece. also managed to barter (spelt right) with the taxi man to get his fare down from 7sol to 4sol, which in english monies is from 1.05 to 60p......result. so i felt a little happier then when i got back, and so booked my bus to take me to Cusco. it is here i am going to spend most of my time in Peru, as i have booked onto the inca trail and machu pichu trip, which will take me on the 23rd, to be hiking on the actual inca trail on Chrsitmas day, with the entrance to Machu Pichu on the dawn of boxing day, which i reckon will be a good time, and pretty special in a way. plus christmas day to me will just be another normal day. 17-12-06 TRAVELLING TO CUSCO My bus is going to take me 20 hours, and is 600 miles in all. Not bad for 12 pounds! but as i am now sitting in the hostel in cusco feeling as sick as a parrot because of 20 hours of winding roads, i felt that maybe if i had spent an extra $25 i could have flown in 1hour 15mins. oh well. i saved some money anyway, which is the main thing. one thing to also point out is the fact the S.America is so much cheaper than north. i read loads of peoples journals, and they tell you how much they have spent in the time they were away. some people were making it around the world in 12 months on a budget of $3000 which is mega cheap. granted they were going to places like S.America, cambodia, thailand, vietnam etc, all the cheap places, but still it just shows how far you can make your money go, which has spurred me on, if not challenged me to do it as cheaply as possible. anway, im going to grab a shower now, and then put this all on the net, and go explore Cusco, so ill speak to you soon! Take care
