I've been near the source of the Nile back in Uganda white water rafting for a day and then for two days I went kayaking. The whitewater rafting was cool, we flipped a couple of times and once I was almost drowned by a huge swedish guyt who grabbed onto my helmet strap thinking it was the rope on the raft. Search for white water rafting jinja on youtube and there are some videos of it apparantly. Kayaking was also good, going with the english companies was $210 for two days but I went to the Ugandan guys directly who live along the river shore and got a good deal, it was quite good as they weren't overly concerned about health and safety and went faster than the english people would have. I can now sort of roll round, something which took my instructor two weeks to learn, so am quite pleased and will perfect my technique in the Zambezi. While there I met an english couple who will be in South Africa at the same time as me and we are going to hire a car and drive from J Berg to some place at the other end of south africa mainly staying along the coast which should be good. I got on v well with them, I think english people are the only people so happy to talk about there toilet habits. I am going to change my plan of countries because they didn't want to go to Nambia or Botswana so I shall do those first. IU thought it would be quite good to go down the countries the Kalahari is in and then would keep crossing it as I went to different places, as it changes a lot and only a small part is desert, but I'm not sure. Tough decisions in my life. I now feel like poo, I have only just got up and I can barely walk, my stomach hurts whenever I cough, I have bruises in various places, my upper left arm is sunburnt where my tshirt kept coming up and im not tanned there, and my face hurts where i kept wiping my nose. And Ive had diahorrea for a few days which Im not happy about as I thought my stomach had hardened to all that sillyness. I woke up and really needed the toilet, went to them and they were all full, waited for 30 seconds then went to reception toi ask if there was anymore and she asked if they were broken or something and i said no i just really need a crap, then she pointed me towards some and I went in, very noisely emptyted myself and then someone next to me blew his nose, so I had to wait in the toilet for him to go before I could leave so he didn't see who had made the huge noise, but then the b****** had taken ages to wash his hands, so I saw him anyway and gave him a slightly embarassed morning. My package from Kenya arrived quickly, only posted it 4 or 5 days ago. I was in Lamu and saw a bloke with some paintings, they were cheap and I realised I needed some soveniers and a paiting was better than a pencil with 'Ive been to Lamu' on it. And apparently the proceeds goes to some childrens project, but I dont really think it did. But can you open it and iron it under a teatowel, do a litte bit first and make sure its ok, I had to fold it put it in my bag. Then can you reroll it, and store it safely. I heard something about Thailand but they seemn to have coups every other year so Im sure it will be ok. Thailand is the second most visited country by backapckers after vietnam so I wont be the only one in the country if something did happen. The exchange rate is really pissing me off, the time I was in uganda it had cost me an extra 36pound to withdraw money at the constantly falling rate than if i had bought it at the rate wen i entered the country. If it stays this low it will cost me another 400pound or so over the time im away, and if it keeps falling even more. I dont know if I could get an account in USD or soething, or buy some gold. But it's annoying. I shall send out an update later, i have a free day as im getting the night bus to rwanda later, which Im not looking forward to as I need a bed. THey offer massages at this backp[acker place, am tempted but they are too expensive. Might just go out into Kampala and pay a street kid a pound to walk over my back, would be cheaper and probably as effective.
