Monday 7th July
After a couple of amazing days at the Garden Festival with the girls for Emma's hen do it was time to meet back up with Mark in Zadar and hopefully he will have Georgie in two as she arrived today for a holiday and to keep me company whilst Mark is on the stag next weekend, so feeling a little exhausted and fragile I managed to get myself on a bus and after an uneventful ride was in Zadar.....on Mark's advise I grabbed a taxi and when I was dropped off 2 minutes later at the old town gate I realised I could have walked! I found the hostel easy enough and as I was checking in who came strolling down the stairs....Mark and Georgie....perfect timing.
I dropped my bags in our room and then we headed out for a Classic Croatian lunch of a pizza slice...it was much needed. We then wandered around town and down to the pier to listen to the sea organ....which is a system of pipes and whistles in the sea that plays a sound when the waves/current passes through. It was really cool. We then found a travel agent to book our tour to Plitvice lakes, Mark managed to get the price down and we booked for the next day.
With all that sorted we got our swim stuff sorted and headed down to the pier for a sun bake and a swim....Mark and Georgie stood around for ages debating weather to jump in or not....in the end I beat them both too it and they followed. Georgie jumping in was hilarious....she let go of her nose and opened her mouth and nearly drowned.. Haha!
When the sun started to go down we headed back to the room, showered, changed and headed out for dinner. We found a cute little place down a side street and then headed of to the the salute to the sun which was a huge solar panelled disco floor, we spend ages taking pictures and then it was time for bed...we had a trip to get up for!
Tuesday 8th July
As the alarm went off this morning all we could hear was the thunder rolling in and the rain hammering down....this was not a good sign for our trip to the lakes, so tired and dreading the rain we phoned to postpone the tour for another day.
When we woke up from the extra sleep the sun was shining and we were regretting our decision to postpone the tour...never mind what's done is done. So we headed out and grabbed a juice. We decided to climb the Belfry tower and as we went in the guy asked us if we were English, 'yes' we replied, 'you must go up the tower at your own risk as there were two women who were injured by the thunder in the market this morning' warns the guy....we were no where near the market so with the warning in mind we decided to take the 'risk', after we made it back down in one piece we explored a bit more of the town and went to a temporary exotic animal exhibition which consisted of snakes, lizards and spiders, it was cool and inside which was perfect as the weather was turning again! Although by late after noon the sun was shining and we caught a bit more sun and swam in the sea, no jumping in for Georgie today!
Overall a chilled day finished off perfectly for Mark by watching the football!
Wednesday 9th July
Today was the day....we were finally going to Plitvice lakes, we got up and headed down to the meeting point, within about 5 minutes the heavens opened and it was chucking it down, we ran for cover in a cafe and by the time the bus turned up it had passed thankfully. It was a hour and a half drive to the lakes, which we slept through mostly and just before we got there we stopped for breakfast at a restaurant ....we had an interesting looking omelette and got chatting to two girls who were also heading to the Electric Elephant, then it was onto the lakes. Our tour guide was the cutest he was so good and we followed him and his umbrella round the upper lakes, they were so impressive and beautiful, the reason why there are lakes there and not just one big river is because of calcium over 1000's of years building up which holds the lakes which run into each other. We then took a boat tour across one of the lakes to the lower lakes which I found even more beautiful.
It was so hard not to stop every two seconds to take pictures, but we had to stay with the group and they were moving at pretty fast pace. We eventually got to the cave where we were allowed a whole 10 minutes to explore....by the time we climbed to the top the 10 minutes were over but the views were amazing we could see the lakes falling into one another...beautiful! By the time we got down to the bottom the group had gone ahead and we were playing catch up as we got to the next junction there was our guide waiting for us, the rest of the group had gone ahead to see the big waterfall, we only had 10 minutes here as we were late!
This concluded the tour of the lakes and we were back on the bus and at the restaurant for our 3 course lunch...yum!
We had another nap on the way back to town and before we knew it we were arranging to meet the girls at the bus stop tomorrow and chilling at the hostel. We went out to grab a pizza slice....obvs and then started to watch the football in the hostel....we could hear the rain outside and when we looked people were running and screaming for shelter it was hilarious.
Thursday 10th July
It was up and out this morning as we had the 11 o'clock bus to catch...the rain wasn't a welcome sight and we crossed our fingers it would ease up for the walk to the bus stop....it did. When we got to the bus stop the girls were already in the queue for the tickets so we jumped in with them and bought 5 tickets to Vodice. We grabbed a coffee and before we knew it the bus had arrived and we were loading on our bags....the guy looked very flustered and I don't think he was coping with the amount of people getting on the bus and giving him there luggage....but he seemed to get through it and we began our journey south....and then we stopped, there were two people on the wrong bus, bless them they didn't have a clue what was going on as the guy was shouting at them in Croatian...he got there luggage out and left them by the side of the road like unwanted kittens!
And then we were off again....nope some more people on the wrong bus....they really should check tickets before you get on!
With no more dramas we made it down the coast, Mark and the girls got off at Tisno...well near enough to it for the festival and George and I did the extra 10 minutes to Vodice.
When we got of the bus we were ready to start knocking on doors and find a room, the first one we tried had nothing but apparently his friend did 10 mins walk down the road....I looked at Georgie and she looked at me 'what do you think I ask'.... 'I don't mind' she says (apparently his was riddled with secret head shakes and NO which I was not picking up on! So we said Ok and jumped in the guys car, he drove for a bit into the town and away from the marina we made small talk and then he pulled up at this house....clearly we were staying in a guys spare room possibly his room! George was not best pleased but the deal had been struck so we changed, paid and headed down to the marina.
It was still a little cloudy and so we had a wander grabbed a pizza slice and had a lie down on the pier, after a quick freshen up we headed back into town and had dinner and a few drinks.
