A totally different pace today - we were driven three minutes down the road in the truck to walk onto a local ferry that took us across the harbour entrance to the main ferry terminal for Dar Es Saleem. Here we boarded our ferry for Zanzibar. I nabbed us seats at the back in the upper deck so we could sit outside in shade and enjoy the ocean breeze. A leisurely 2 hours later, having appreciated how many people you can get in a Dhow to do fishing, we saw "Karibu Zanzibar" and disembarked in Stonetown. We were welcomed by Isaac and whisked through customs before a short stroll through alleys to our hotel for the night. Tessa and I are luxuriating in having an en suite bathroom!
For the afternoon we were driven to the spice growing area outside the town where we were welcomed into the home of a local family and given a delicious lunch. We were even more appreciative as they are fasting due to it being Ramadan at the moment. The gentleman of the house then took us to a demonstration private spice farm to show us all the different types of spices still grown in Zanzibar - most of which have been imported throughout the ages. Cardamon, cinnamon, quinoa, lychee, ginger, mace, nutmeg, pepper, lemongrass, coconut and much more. We had men weaving us flax accessories, others climbing trees to get us samples and facts galore. A fantastic hour.
In the evening we were walked down to the local night market - we were both expecting something a little different than what we experienced. In our minds this was going to be a place with stalls displaying fresh fish and seafood that we would pick and then would be cooked for us. However what it was instead was lots of pre-prepared kebab sticks and other options that got reheated on a grill when ordered. We tried some fish and a samosa from one stall. It was mediocre to say the best. Others experienced some great food and others poor. We then found a stall doing banana and chocolate crepes - and we watched it being cooked. That was delicious. And we thoroughly enjoyed a freshly squeezed sugar cane juice with ginger and lemon. We even managed to find our hotel by ourselves with only one minor detour down narrow alleyways.
