We arrived in Hanoi around 8.30am. There weren't as many people on the road driving like lunatics as we expected but it was Sunday morning and even though the Vietnamese don't worship anyone they're still entitled to god's day!
It was dark and damp, drizzly rain and cold compared to the rest of the places we have been in Vietnam!
We were feeling the ride on a back of a motorbike so we grabbed a taxi and he actually knew where he was going unlike the majority of them say yes they know and take us to a completely different place, leaving me to direct them from google maps!
This city looks as though it has a lot of potential with it's little flower gardens and the lakes could be nice to walk around aswell, there are coffee shops gallour and lovely little restaurants amongst the street vendors or plastic stool restaurants.
Yes it is dirty and a lot of the buildings are old and run down but I don't think the weather helps, you don't notice this as much if the weather is nice.
We pulled up at the hotel, everyone was asleep inside so we had to wake them up! On gods day aswell if be fuming! We had to wait until 10am to check in so we went for a walk around town and purchased ourselves a rain mac, £10 for north face jackets so we couldn't go wrong. I was in the shop spraying Scott with water and rub it in to see if it went through the material haha, In the end I soaked the rain jacket so we sort of had to buy them haha!
We were like two kids at Christmas, proud of our new purchases we strutted our stuff down to some side street and found a cheap family restaurant, traditional Vietnamese breakfast, Phò Bo. (Beef and rice noodle soup) it was delicious, although it is Hanoi's speciality! It originates from here.
We managed to check in at around 10.30am, we both fell asleep. I didn't wake up until 2.30pm, I must have been tired! The bedroom was massive with two double beds but I'm sure the mattress of the one bed was made our of concrete! It smelt of smoke in the room a little though and everything was cold and felt a little damp.
Didn't bored me to fall fast asleep in though!
We showered and went back out around 3.30pm, again just wandering the old quarter, we came across the lake which has a newly built big food building opposite with fountains and fancy stuff, but the menus are pretty pricey for us so we headed the opposite way through endless streets of clothes shops and food vendors until we came across the hostel that Sarah and Mike were staying at, we were starving and it was raining so we went in and grabbed some food in there; it was nice and the beer was cheap! They had free beer between 6-7pm, no wonder it was free, the smell turned out stomachs! Oh it was vile! People were drinking it for the sake of it though because it was free but that was just too much! Yuk.
We retired at 7.30pm, tired still and didn't want to drink anymore beer. Scott was hungry again surprise surprise so went to KFC to get some popcorn chicken on the way back home. It gets cold here in the evening too, not freezing but there's a chill!
