So here I am in a sweaty youth hostel in Xi'an(just using their internet.I'm om a hotel at the moment). We went to see the Terecotta Army today.Very impressive. The sheer scale of it and the details on the warriors and guards. They still have no idea hoe many more are buried under the ground in the area. The Army was built by 720,000 people over a period of 38years.It was commissioned by the Emperor Qin Shih Hung Di when he was only thirteen years old (morbid preoccupations for a young buy I know) buy hey at least it was ready for him when he died. Yesterday we went to the Bell and Drum Towrers, used in ancient Xi'an for time keeping and the like.We saw a 6,500kg bell and an assortment of drums ranging from many periods and used for many reasons, everything from war and telling people the time to making music. We saw some kids performing on the different drums (wasnt sure at first when they came out just clanging a bunch of symbols ina chaotic fashion) but once they got into it they were pretty impressive.Had a lovely dinner of spiced lamb kebabs and vegatable noodles at the Muslim Qeater yesterday. The meal (for two of us)and two waters came to just 17 yuan(about 1 pund seventy).Makes you realise what a rip-off London is.The city is very humid and polluted.A constant smog shrouds the city, but the buzz is great and its just so different from Euripean cities. There is no mistaking how Asian it is.This evening at a nice restaurant I did a wee squatting over a hole in the ground and the traffic is crazy.Buses, taxis, cars, bikes, motorcycles all collide into eachother ina continual chaotic motion. Its really busy and really populated and the Chinese are fascinated by foreigners. They stare unashamadly and I have actually been asked if they could have their photo taken with me!Will add some photos when I can work it out on a computer thats all in Chinese characters.xx
