Breakfast with Clive and Sarah and a pleasant stroll along the dockside with them to Little Venice. Then, as we were so close to the centre of London we thought we should at least see some of the city's landmarks taking a walk along Edgeware Road to Marble Arch, Hyde Park and the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in Kensington Gardens. In no time at all, it was time for us to say farewell to Clive and Sarah and to be back on the bike and travelling up the M1, just a few junctions to North Watford, to spend the weekend with Neil's cousin Andrew and his wife Karen.
We were trying to work out when the last time we had seen them both and decided it was probably eight years since we had seen Andrew and maybe eighteen since we had seen Karen so we had a lot to catch-up on. As Andrew and Karen had been to NZ in February, and obviously we had missed them, we were also interested to hear about their trip and see their photos.
On Saturday we all went to St Albans to learn about the Roman history of Verulamium - the Roman name for St Albans - at the museum and the remains of the Roman Theatre. Together with visits to a couple of local pubs, some of the oldest in England, we had a wonderful and very interesting day.
Sunday morning meant we had to say goodbye to Andrew and Karen but we had had such a brilliant weekend. Thanks to both of them and their lovely family for making us feel real welcome. Hope to see them both again, in the not too distant future!!
Off to Dover to catch the ferry to Calais for France for our week with our very good Kiwi friends, Bernie and Kate.
