Wow is Florence beautiful and I must come back here! We arrived later in the evening and took a taxi to our hotel which was nice enough. The first thing on our minds was food. So we set out on foot to find a nice Italian meal. Well, after hunting for about an hour close to the river we decided that we should go back closer to the city. This place is beautiful! My eyes were trying to keep up with all the sites and sounds around me and I just couldn't get enough of it.
We finally came to a restaurant that seemed good enough and wow did it turn out to be good! This had to be one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had, seriously I know it is Italy and of course the pasta would be better but now I have been changed for life, LOL. I had some kind of pasta with a lemon cream sauce that was topped with arugula and shaved parmesan cheese, I mean come on simple flavors that complemented each other beautifully! I am now in food heaven :)
As we were finishing our dinner in this little square sitting outside and watching the people, the streets coming alive with the sounds of glasses clinking and the loud rumble of conversations, we soaked up the atmosphere and were apart of the Italian life style. This is what I live for! To experience people, life and culture. By the time we got up from our dinner and strolled through the streets looking for a taxi the late evening had set into the city with young party goers and students sitting in various locations grouped together and hanging out on the streets. In the U.S. this would not be allowed but what an amazing atmosphere this created. We didn't stay out too late because we wanted to get up and see the sites in the morning. ;) David here I come!
Well I decided that I would get up really early in the morning long before the museum opened so that I could get in to see the David. I left my two friends with a plan to meet up with them later. I took a taxi and arrived at the museum to find a bit of a line had already appeared, so I took my place at the end and started my wait. After about 2 hours, moving about 10 feet, rained on, and watching two guys set up what looked like a square tin box into an entire store with over hangs, scarves and belts hanging off of every little corner and piece of space that it could cover, I knew then that I wasn't going to get in to see the David anytime soon :( Then after waiting some more and not moving an inch I decided to pay a tour company that was selling a package called cut the line. Of course this was going to cost me a bit more...but at this point I was on a mission! I then left my place in this line to join the tour group line and of course I meet some new friends from Texas :) An extremely nice family and pretty sure I talked their two kids into doing semester at sea when they get in college :) (Thought...Maybe I should be going into recruiting...hmmm) well then we waited and chatted for another two hours with a mission to get into the museum by any means necessary, LOL. This may sound crazy but it became a bit of an adventure, haha. I mean I know that waiting to see the David for 5 hours sounds crazy but once I started waiting I just had to get in, I mean this is why I came to Florence!
Finally I am in the museum. I had to pushing past people to get in and I have to say it is a pretty small museum. Now in the museum I still had to wait because I had purchased the tour so I then had to follow the guide through the museum... well I snuck away to go to the David anyway. I just couldn't contain my excitement any more. I rounded a corner in the museum and there he was HUGE! He is much bigger then I thought and wow what a display. I literally stopped in my tracks and just stood there unmoving, the sound drowning out around me and stared at David...WOW! What a work of art, seriously!!!! Incredible that this was carved to such perfection. You are not supposed to take pictures but I did anyway, I mean I waited for 5 hours so I had too! He is cracking though so he may not be there for much longer. So I guess it is a good thing that I waited. They do have sensors on him that are monitoring the cracks. Crazy to think that we might lose this work of art. I think I walked around him about 20 times sitting in various place to just look. He is placed in the center of the rome with a dome over the top that allows light to shin on him. There is nothing else around him and he stands on a slab of marble taller then me. Though there were so many people there to see him it didn't feel like it because you can stand anywhere in the room and see him. I guess you can say I felt that the 5 hours I spent waiting was worth it!
After I finally pried myself away to go meet back with my friends to take a train home, I made one last stop. Of course after such an adventurous day I had to stop at the gift shop to buy everything David :) I purchased magnets, postcards, and a bumper stinker the says "David Mania". After all I think I after my crazy adventure to get there you can say that I was a part of the David mania!
Off to Rome!
