Getting off the plane was pretty interesting as you had guys singing and playing instruments which was quite a differeent welcome and did kind of make you smile. then me and lou were took into what we thought was a dodgy office to get bus tickets but it did however turn out to be okay so off we went to coral coast which is inbetween Sigatoka and suava. When on the bus kept making me laugh because we'd go through a hotel and the men at the gate would stand up throw there hand up and shout some kind of welcome was crazy but funny. when we got to our place the bus just dropped us off on the side of the road and we had to walk down to the botom of this hill were this little van came to pick us up, real dodgy and funny taking us up this little road we were bouncing all over the place! we were shown to our rooms and the place actually looked really nice big huts with straw roofs and lots of green spce everywhere its own private beach and pool and free things for us to do everyday. so we sat down for breakfast and i noticed these guys eating bacon and egg sandwiches and after craving them the whole time that i was in the USA i had to order one, after talking to the guys a little they told us we needed to try a rum shots and so they brought us one not the best ive ever tasted but did remind me off carribean rum. then we heade off for a nap as the flight and bus had killed me.after waking up in the dark i got changed quickly and headed to get some dinner i went for the fish and chips and whatever fish it was was amazing never had it before but was almost like chicken it was that chunky defo the best ive ever had! then i had a few drinks and got to know some of the other people whilst lou was still asleep in bed and later on after a few headed to bed myself.
In the morning we headed out for breakfast then decided to go into town were there alot going on and everybody says bula and smiles at you and we got taken into a market to buy things and the local school people kept asking us to have lunch with them. once back at mango bay i headed over to see the pineapple smashing contest which emma won so i somehow also ended up with a pineapple drink and then we played cards beacuse the weather decided not to be so good and then i went for a chill out, but unfourtunetly fell asleep and didnt even wake up for dinner or the kava cermony.
Next morning i ate beans on toast and yes at this point that is a luxury! tasted so good and had to pack up to get ready to head to Nadi, which after a 3hour bus journey and a stop off where i picked up some chicken curry which was the spiciest ever and a conversation on the bus how i looked part fijian we finally arrived at Nadi airport where we had to wait for our free shuttle to our next place smugglers cove! when we got to smugglers cove i was actually suprised how nice the girls sanctuary was really nice and meet a girl from wolverhampton, and a girl that was on the same route as us, but also the rudest girl ever we actually thought she was foriegn for how long because she ignored us everytime we tried to conversate....also got my first warm shower in how long!...so we headed out for dinner and i bumped into shelby from las vegas who gave me a quick run down of all the cheap places to go weres a good night out and who does the cheapest food but as was our 1st night we couldnt be bothered to go too far so we met a women called jules who i think was actually really rich after the stories she was telling us about selling her yaht and supporting her husband as well as running a company...will defiently have to google her at some point! but we had dinner with her and chatted about life and what shes learned and what weve already learned quite a deep conversation to be fair, but interesting none the less and finally when she headed off the kava cermony started and as we still had not attended one we decided to give this one a try....as kava virgins we had to get iniciated into the Kavaholics club with singing and shown how to do a coconut cup properly which is by saying Bula, one clap and downing the liquid which btw tastes like dirty dish water then claping three times. After a few it starts to numb your tounge and then makes you sleepy i kept sticking to low tides or medium tides couldnt down a tsunami full of that liquid was way too much for me. however am glad i tried it but i defientely slept well that night. on our last night in the sanctuary we watched the fire dancers which was really good but quite funny because the other fire dancers that had been drinking tried to join in which the hotel wasnt too happy about and turned the music off on them but as that hard life of sunbathing proved i was so tierd that it was a pretty early night for us, but spose it doesnt help waking up at 7.00 everyday for breakfast! all i want is a lie in!!so our last night spent in nadi before the islands we were kind of worried about because of sharing a dorm with 34 people it could of ended very badly, but when we went in we were pleasently suprised that each 4 bed was sectioned off so i didnt seem so bad plus was pretty quite on the night considering. but during the day we went over to horizon for lunch and met the guy that sings the songs at the Kava cermony and then started chatting to tw guys from Australia and then we decided to go on a mission to get some vodka, we first headed to the local bottle shop but after seeing the price and the fact that the shop looked like a prison as everything was behind a cage we decided to head to the supermarket to hopefully get a cheaper deal...however we decided that the walk was to far so we just kind of stood at the road deciding what to do when a local Fijian guy stopped his car and asked us where we wanted to go....at first we were like what but then the fijian singer said like lets go so we all clamberedin this can the fisrt think that made me laugh was the whole of the inside was covered in lilac fur and i mean everywhere even the dash board i felt like id gone back in time....it was so hot and sticky in there with everyone in there but made slightly worse by the fact that the windows didnt seem to open. When we finally got to supermarket we all got out and headed inside to see what it was like and tbh it was alot better than alot of the USA supermarkets, so we got the vodka and mixer and headed back to our 'taxi' man who had waited for us and was waiting to take us back to the hotel....which we only payed him $7 for!..so we headed to the beach were we met a few other people two girls one from scotland and one from london who'd travelled our route and was giving us some tips and then we got into some debate with the fijians, aussies and american how britian ruled the world but was funny we drank and watched the sun set before evryone headed off, as usal after drinking i went straight off to sleep.
Had an early morning the next day as had to get up for the Yasawa flyer at Denaru port to take us to the fiji islands.....the boat journey was about 4 and half hours to get right up to the top of the Yasawas to Nucula where we had to get of the big boat to a little boat to transfer us to the little island and the water was brilliantly blue and then they made all the men get out and push the boat to shore so that we didnt have to get our feet wet and as we arrived we also got a welcome sond sang by all the workers at nubula lodge...which was quite a nice welcome and straight away they served us lunch which was a really good vegtable curry rice and popadoms. which i obviously finished in seconds after lunch we were shown to our rooms and as lou had the dodgy pass and the bigger rooms i ended up sleeping in her bure with her espicially as she had her own bathroom....later that afternoon after id tanned on the beach for several hours and fell asleep leaving myself with the stupiest tan lines we got change for dinner and headed back to the main hut. for dinner they served us fish and potatoes which was quite to my liking but not actually too bad considering.and we chatted to a few people and then played heads and tails which if you won you got to get a free drink and the played nationality games where you had to represent your contry our group was quite serious about the whole thing and wanted to sing the national anthem which was actually even note perfect to the guitar which was actually quite funny when all me and another couple wanted to do was the office dance to show the stupid side of the uk not the prim proper way, but no one wanted to join in so we kind of did it at the end anyway!.....then agian beacuse sunbathing is such a hard job we were knackered and went to bed quite early like antisocial people but i couldnt care less its a hard life tanning!!!....next morning we were heading to coral view resort so we had to check out and as the weather wasnt looking too great me and lou decided to try and play volleyball and i do mean try we were so bad and the ball just kept rolling away into the water and covering us in sand but in our defence volleyball is really hard when theres just two of you playing, then after yet more time spent lying about tanning and brief wonders into the waters or across the rocks it wastime for lunch before the boat transfers.....where we were treated to a spag bol.
When we got to coral view ther was a faf about my booking beacuse they hadnt read there emails in a few days i was getting so pissed just wanted to check in but we also got another lunch which was some kind of pasta with veg and pineapple in wasnt actually too bad tho too be fair. Once finally checking in i found out we were in some mixed drm and id been put by the girls who are too good to talk to anyone but themselves eurgh so after getting showered i headed of to sunbathe because i clearly needed to sort my dodgy tan lines out but heading to the beach realised coral didnt have much of a beach and instead had grass n wooden loungers so there i set up camp for the day reading my book being stuck on an island doesnt really give you much else to do but chill out and relax something i was not too used to after spending weeks in the USA. Later on after trying to sort out my fiji fro into something acceptable to wear to dinner got changed and headed to dinner, me and lou decided to get a drink and as i somehow hadnt payed for the previous place i decided to treat myself to two drinks after a brief chat with the bar tender on some music we went to sit for a while that is until the bar tender decided to ask us how to make a Mojito because for some reason in fiji they dont use barcardi so its made with rum or vodka so we opted to show him with rum and he was asking all questions about how to get the mint leaves to twist properly so they dont taste too strongly so we made this our mission to teach him how to make the perfect tasting Mojito, and with credit to him it didnt taste too bad for his first attempt but unfourtunetly he didnt give it us as a free sample...gutted but we went to sit at the table for dinner and were chatting when two english girls came over and asked if they could join us so we spent most the night chatting with them some guys also came over but they seemed a little unerved wether to speak to us but after more drinks and a few stupid games one which involved seeing who0 had the best chest and one highly embrassing game were you had men feel up your legs to se who had the best ones!
We all started talking slowly and we were told there was a turtle that had laid some eggs on the island which i didnt quite believe and when we got there i didnt quite think looked real but everyone was taking photographs and then as the man went to touch it it started moving as if it was breathing, but then a fijian man jumped out and shouted bula was pretty funny to see the look on some of the peoples faces.....after that brief stunt we all headed outside and the two girls suggested drinking games as they had a bottle of absolute vodka so we sat down and the guys asked if they could join and some other girls but we were a bit more like yea you can join us but were not moving rather stubbornly and then we all strated playing games together but then one girl wanted to change to frankly a game to hard to be arsed with when your drinking so we said nah were out and started playing our own game which of course she cpoied but didnt want to join in with ours but to be honest we were probably having more fun anyway and played a few other games till we were all pretty wasted and headed off to bed! At this point i think me and lou we completley annoying to everyone who was asleep in the dorms as we went in laughing and being complete idiots especially when she was messing with a cockroach i was screaming like a typical girl and then also when id thrown a random ring at her the noise that lou made had me in stitches for god knows how long all before we went back in the main room and sat giggling and b****ing as drunks normally do.
Next morning headed back out and sat around and was in the hammock most the morning where i once again flashed but dont think anyone saw thank god and then it started to rain slightly so we headed in. and waited round for the boat transfer to Mantaray island resort.
On the approach to mantaray it actually looked really nice but as the weather had turned slightly we just headed to our rooms had a brief tour then sat in the main beach bure and read our books.....until dinner time which i was so hungry for which we had a starter an entree a choice of which main i had chicken kebabs and then brulee for dessert, later that evening we had the traditonal fiji singing and dancing but one guy was totallky hilarious as he was pretty much giving this german girl we met a lap dance it was the funniest thing id seen in a while shaking his jelly belly everywhere without a care in the world so enthusiastically. Then the so called threating dances where they would go up to the guests with weapons staring at them evil as if they were about to kill them then shout bula and laugh, and of course i got dragged up to do some weird funky dance and then everyone had to do a stupid conga where you had to copy whatever moves the leader did whch could get quite intresting but after all the entertainment we headed to bed for once again an early night!
Next day was miserable and the sea was pretty choppy so i decided against the kyaking and after breakfast we headed down where they plyed hangover 2 until the boat transfer arrived.
the boat journey on the yasawa was really pretty rough and everytime we'd go over a huge wave it felt like being on a rollercoaster stomach left behind as you moved around...the transfer to the smaller boat was probably on of the worst too as i tried to step down the boat half moved so legs were quite stretched apart and then they only let three people on it becaue it wasnt so safe so we headed of to octopus resort.
Octopus however was a really nice place if a little touristy compared to the other islands had a sand restuarant that was filled with sand but the place was full of couples and children there were only two other young people there and they werent exactly muy cup of tea so i strted chatting to two ladies one was from the USA and the other new Zealand they were really nice actually told me they do alot of work in fiji, and of course they were drinkers which probably helped some! aftyer getting a free cocktail that i somehow didnt get added to my room bill we had dinner which was really amazing curry night but fijian style....I had so much was like a little fatty with my soup and plate piled high although shouldnt of had the dessert which was really nice which is why i ate it even though i should of known better. later there was some games going on the beach and i watched for a little while while they did the limbo and some crazy balloon game but didnt fell too good so had to head off to bed....which by the way was actually the most comfortable matress ive slept in the whole trip and someone had even been nice enough to put my mosquito net down for me.
Next morning before having loads for breakfast and the best omlette i decided to go sit on the beach before heading out on the village trip, one of the ladies borrowed me her sarong so that i could cover my knees as i hadnt taken any appropriate clothing with me to the islands. we headed off and had to walk up a million steps to get to the top of a hillside and then we had to walk along a mud ridge to get to the otherside of the island...along the way we also went past several pigpens full of pigs but there was also one that seemed to have a pen up against the side of a hiuge rock and it was full ov mud and stunk i had to walk past that one pretty quick! finally when we got to the village we had to walk through quite a part of it and it was weird how they had these crazy cookers outside all smoking and that there showers were just flimsy but i did enjoy the fact that one man had a little goat in his house...but the dogs were everywhere and the fijian dogs all look the same some kind of mix breed of a jack russell but alot bigger. So after crossing the dodgy little bridge we headed over to the kindergarden, where the kids compared to the last school i went to were extremely behaved and sat nice and quite until told to sing they sang so many songs and for there age were pretty good after they'd sang for us though one lady had some sweets to give themand after shacking everyones hands they all bombarded around her trying to get some sweets with there hands in the air and a few checky ones tried to get two....but the funniest was the littlest boy in the class who had gone outside and realised that everyone had sweets but didnt know who was giving them out, so kept going up to everyone and holding his hand out was so cute, later we went through the village and saw the crafts which they had made i ended up buying a ring mainly because it got stuck on my finger but hey all good. After heading back and having one ofthe little boys as my tour guide and asking me bizzare questions about wild dogs and ants i had lunch which was a really good handmade burger and got chatting to a fitness freak American guy that clearly thought he was hot and a couple from Argentina. Later the fijians and some of the blokes had a volleyball competition which they were pretty good at put mine and lous game to shame.
After getting the transfer boat i was off to beachcomber the so called party island. when getting off i realised a few of the girls id seen on differend islands were also going there and of course they put me in the same beds as them, as for the bunks themselves worse ones yet so many filled in such a small place and open air...this is where i think i got my cold from! but anyway after showering and getting ready and some general chatter to some of the girls i headed out for dinner. There was a bench quite full towards the back so i went and joined them started with a few drinks and then as usal i was doubling up on the fiji gold and we had dinner which was some speghetti mash combo not the best but not too bad and then more drinking, some of the guys brought a vonu tower and veronika who'd id seen on several of the islands seemed to be getting quite drunk but her friend was not too happy and went off but as the music carried on you had one newly married couple who you would not even think were married girating on the dance floor the woman falling about and missing her chair. Eventually it kinda either moved to the dancefloor which i wasnt feeling or a beer pong table which when playing with beer bottle lids instead of a ball is the hardest game ever especially with slightly impared vision! At some point i aslo decided it was a good idea to go and test how warm the sea was so ran in slightly further then i meant to and a huge wave soaked my bum, as i came out dave thought i'd been skinny dipping and was saying i was now MOIST! worst word ever!
In the morning headed out for the breakfast actually watched a little bit of MTV and went to sort the fro out before going and reading/ sunbathing before lunch, which by the way the islands are very regimented in times for eating like being in an army camp....lunch was some time of curry with salad i ate it purley because i was so hungry. Had a walk round the island which was suprisly smaller than i expected and then cilled out spoke to veronika for a while and generally didnt do too much and waited for the baoat to arrive to move onto Bounty island.
when arriving to bounty island made a change to every other island because noramlly you have so many staff there to sing but this time there were only two people singing but in a way that was a relief so much singing on all the islands. I got shown to my room and past all the gardens that are on the island then had my first proper hot shower in what seemed like forever before getting ready and heading for dinner i sat with four girls who were travelling all over fiji teaching girl guides and had a really good meal which i did want seconds of but didnt wanna seem like a fatty then we moved over to the bar to get a few drinks....which turned into several after drinking games we also played heads and tails and some weird skwarking dance, but i was knackered after beachcombers late night so headed ack around eleven.
In the morning after waking up feeling ridiculously s*** i decided i was going to go snorkelling and kayaking which iwas so random on my own was parnoid i was going to float off but did see some really amazing looking fish and a blue star fish pretty gald i didnt see a reef shark or eel though would of crapped myself, but got cramp in my leg so gave that up and went to get the kayak.
Which wouldnt of been so bad if i actually had a life jacket because i was going to go round the island following the current but i was tolod i had to stay in sight so i had to come back against the waves and my arms were killing i forgot how much work it was! but that was pretty much all i could be bothered with doing for the day as still felt like death so just spent the rest of the day passed out on a lounger.
After getting back to mainland after the longest boat/coach i jumped in the showere tried to sort myself out came out and watched the rugby for a little while and met gen and the german dude who brought me some drinks before i slunk of to bed to put vix on and take some tablets mmmm sexy yeah!?
the next few days consisted of tanning, reading, sleeping, drinking and eatingand on the rainy days reading inside...also having a random vodka and jam sandwiches picnic and card game with vodka and not doing too much unless there was a show on which by this point i know most the words to...my favourites being papya the bula song and the sad(insest) song, until we decided to get off our backsides and head to Nadi town to see what was around, i picked up a top and a mini hot water bottle for New zealand and then we went oin search of the McD's and after not having one in so long tasted so good but funny thing was when it was round the corner at home i wouldnt dream of walking to it yet here i walked for ages in the baking sun just to get one it was like reaching mecca well almost!! After sitting on the beach for the rest of the day had a curry at bamboo and had some drinks at smugglers with Tom and Ali and me and lou finished of the last of the vodka.
Next morning after being woken up at stupid oclock by the girl in my section i couldnt be arsed to do anything so spent most the morning in bed and possibly being filmed on some weird chinese show, before i tried to be slighty productive and sort my bag and do some laundry before obviously ending up back on the beach with the random foal running down the beach and being a beach bum....but oh well guess im on Fiji time now and its all bluring.
