Day 35 - Mon 23 April - Mossburn
There was quite a bit of wind in the night rocking us about. However it was a lovely fine day for a drive up to the nearby Mavora Lakes. 36km of the 41km out there is gravel so we played dodge the pothole! Once we got near the lakes it was a nice drive through beech forest to the DOC campsite right by the lake. It's also a popular spot for sandflies so we didn't stop there for lunch! Instead we took the gravel road out to Mt Nicholas Station which goes right back to the Lake Wakatipu shore at Walter Peak Station. The road was in good condition with some fords to cross. Wow - what stunning scenery! You just have to store it in your visual memory bank as a camera can't really capture it. Vast areas of red tussock and majestic mountains on each side - real Lord of the Rings country. We stopped for lunch above the lakeside with a view back towards Glenorchy one way and the Remarkables the other. We could see the SS Earnslaw making her way up the lake to Walter Peak Station. We passed cyclists on the road so they were keen! What a wonderful day!
