Day 4: Journey to Zagreb.
What a long day! After 20 hours of traveling I have finally reached Zagreb. But let's start at the beginning of the journey, on the sleeper train where I left you last.
Despite all my reservations about getting overnight trains, especially in eastern Europe, and considering I didn't take any last year, the first part of my journey went very smoothly. I got on the train at 10pm and found I was in a 6 berth couchette compartment with 5 other travelers (2 boys from hong Kong, 1from Chile, 1 from turkey and a girl from Nigeria). We chatted for a bit, finding out about each others travel experiences. After a while we all drifted off to sleep. Even though they were proper beds (more like folded down flat chairs with a blanket) I managed to get 6 hours of sleep. By the time I woke up we were only about half an hour away from Vienna (my first stop) so I got my stuff together and cleaned myself up a bit.
I had to wait about an hour and a half at the station in Vienna before my next train so I got myself a coffee and an apple strudel (well I was in Austria after all) and read some of my book). It was strange being back in vienna, especially at the same station I had waited in last year before I went to Slovenia. The time passed by quite quickly and I was soon on the next train. It took about 5 hours to travel from Vienna to Zidani most in Slovenia, passing through some scenic mountains. In Zidani Most I had another long wait, about 2.5 hours, until the final train to Zagreb. Luckily the station, which was nestled in the middle of the mountains (see picture), had a bar. So I sat outside and had a drink whilst reading White Fang. After a couple of hours I was back on the move again. The last part of the journey only took about two hours, with a twenty minute stop at the Croatian boarder to get our passports checked (sadly I didn't get a stamp).
Finally, after 20 hours of travelling I got off the train in Zagreb. Now all I had to do was find my hostel. Thanks to Google maps I managed to find it quite easily (even though it was a bit further out of the city than I would have liked). The owner was really nice and showed me around. The hostel was very new, and almost felt like student halls. There was only 3 other people staying there, 2 Irish girls and a guy from South Africa (Andrew). Since I'd been traveling for a whole day and I was shattered by this point. I popped to the shops (trusty Lidl) to get some food, made some dinner quickly and then headed to bed.
So there you have my first proper day of traveling. Tomorrow its time to sight see again (always more fun).
Until then.
