Day 1.
So, we have arrived in New York City! How exciting! After a v comfortable flight (I slept through two films...) we arrived an HOUR EARLY (huzzah!) and then stood in a queue at border control for an hour and a half (boooo...) But after a quick hop on the Air train, we got on the Subway and then swiftly emerged in Manhattan. And suddenly NYC hit us square in the face - the yellow cabs, the smoke rising from the subway, the skyscrapers, the fire escapes...the DUNKIN DONUTS! It was all instantly recognisable and magical. We checked in to our lovely little hotel in Tribeca, and then went for a little mosey around to get our bearings. After casually strolling past ANNA KENDRICK, we headed west, and walked down by the Hudson for a bit, past a very American scene of some jocks playing basketball in an urban park whilst people jogged by the river. Can it get any more New York-y than this, I thought? And then in the distance loomed Lady Liberty in all her statuesque, welcoming beauty. Cue the first GASP moment of the holiday. After this we wandered some more, and found ourselves having a couple of moments at the World Trade Center Memorial pools, which are very beautiful and calm.
Our body clocks being totally screwed due to jet lag, we were suddenly ravenous, so headed to Little Italy for some dinner. We found a small, reasonably priced Italian place, which was very nice, but really they could have plonked down an old boot covered in tomato sauce and I would have been happy, I was so hungry. We valiantly fought the jet lag for a little while longer but soon accepted defeat and headed back to the hotel. But not before catching a glimpse of the Empire State Building (second GASP of the evening!) on our walk back. There's so much to see! I can't wait.
So now I am back at our hotel, v tired but being kept awake by two VERY loud, very American women in the room next door, who appear to be conversing via loudhailers. The city that never sleeps is rumbling outside (literally - the subway trains make the hotel shake...) and I can't wait to explore it. Tomorrow we are doing mega touristy things - including the Statue of Liberty tour. Cameras ready!!
