We are now over a week into our grand adventure and it has been an eye-opening and exciting first 10 days!
The first seven days were somewhat of a blur, with jetlag, drunken antics and lazy days all seemingly rolling into one.
Once we finally arrived in Ko Phangan after an eleven hour plane, a 12 hour train, a three hour bus and then a 2 hour boat we were met with one of the strangest cultural differences from our usual western ways; moped taxis! After starting off understandably apprehensive we decided to head off to our accommodation with our rucksacks inbetween the drivers' legs and us holding on for dear life on the back. As strange as this first way, the journey was suprisingly comfortable, and we arrived at our location a little windswept but now full of excitement.
The accommodation itself was pretty much idillic other than the location. We stayed in a raised hut with air conditioning, 2 beds, a shower, a T.V and most importantly, a wester toilet. Having spent two days either weeing in the sink in our room on the train or just holding on for dear life, being able to have a sit down wee was amazing!
We then made the (dubious) decision of hiring mopeds. At 200Baht a day it was a cheaper option than an taxi from our 2km out of town accommodation two or three times a day, and would allow us to explore the island at our own leisure.
This seemingly intelligent decision was almost made to look stupid immediately, with Aadil deciding not to turn as soon as we left the Palida Gardens, and instead career into the nearest bush! The image of looking into my mirror and seeind Aadil struggling to get the bike out of the bush will stick with me forever!
However, after a slow start we found our feet and began to see parts of the island we would never had without thebikes. Over the next three days we say as much as we could of Ko Phangan, with a waterless waterfall and a rural fishing village two of the highlights.
On Saturday evening it was time to watch West Ham and Chelsea play in the football. We found a British bar, drank 60baht Chang and watched both teams fight to success to the dismay of the Spurs Fan Bar Manager and the Germancs we were sat with!!! Aadil had stopped drinking relatively early, as inbetween the games we went for food, and the English loving waitress Linda had given him some gone off shrimp which was gladly sicked up in the bar's toilet!
After a 6am finish, Sunday was pretty lazy, with a little bike ride to cure the hangover and shrimp! This was until we decided to go to the Black Moon Party, the Full Moon's trippy little brother! We drank buckets of Sangsom, RedBull and Coke and sneaked another bottle of Rum into the party, and then partied till 6am with hippies and hardcore ravers on the beach.
We left for Ko Samui on Monday with hangovers and tired bodies which weren't suited for boats and rickety vans! After an endless search we found beachside bungalows for a reasonable 400baht a night. With the beach literally 10metres from our door it was a godsend!
Apart from eating cheap food and lazing on the beach, Samui will be remembered for one thing; our first ladyboy show! Wow! This was the strangest thing ever, with one called Gisele taking a particular liking to us and not leaving us alone! The picture's will never do justice to what we saw, with one ladyboy bending over and revealing the fantastic sight of a ballbag! We decided aftert this there was no chance but to go out, so we drank some more buckets and a number of Chang's and celebrated the loss of our ladyboy show virginity!
The last day in Chaweng was spent on the amazing beach eating fresh corn on the cob and chatting to some Dane's we met. We layed poker with a lad called Jonas who gave us some invaluable travelling advice whilst Aadil stole his money!
We are now in Koh Tao and 3days in to our Open Water SCUBA Diving License course! We are up at 6am for our final dives but it will all be worth it! So it time for some more Jackie Changs and the start of a new adventure!
