Hey everyone,
Haven't written in a while as we have been really busy! We took a bus overnight up to chiang mai which was less than comfortable. However when we got there we checked into our hotel and prepared for our trek. We had a great group on board, with two german, two canadian, two new zealanders and two other english. Our trek was 2 nights 3 days. Looking back it probably wasn't the best thing to do while i was still ill but it was good fun and very tiring! Lots of walking through dense rainforest and paddy fields. The scenery was amazing. Our first day was a 3 hour walk and then a nights stay at a waterfall. Everyone went swimming, except for me as i wasn't feeling 100% still. That night we had a camp fire and stayed up chatting to everyone quite late. It is a lot colder in chiang mai so our nights sleep wasn't the best. The next day consisted of a lot more walking some up some down. Another waterfall and a nights stay at the karen village. Our guide Lau was very helpful and chatty, keen to improve his english. We decided to have another camp fire so the guys went off to collect firewood (and look manly). After a few beers they decided collecting wood wasn't manly enough and set off into the jungle to find some bamboo. Some time later we hear them trudging back through with a 25 metre piece of bamboo which they had cut down with a knife. Boys will be boys... after realising that green wood doesn.t burn they hid it in the bushes. This was found the next morning by Lau and lets just sayi dont think he was too happy about it. That day we did a little more walking for the morniong and ended our trek with bamboo rafting. This was the highlight of the trip and we all really enjoyed it. Although the water was cold we were all soaked by the end. The thai guys who were manning the rafts took great pleasure in soaking us, me in particular. Our friendly guide, waited until i was bone dry then filled up his water bottle and poored it all over my head. In retaliation i tried to throw him in which ened in him throwing me in! We went back to our hotel nice and soggy! The following day we organised a thai cooking class for me and mountain biking for Tom. We both had a great time and i learnt how to cook 6 dishes while Tom earnt himself a very saw bottom!! Our last day in chiang Mai we decided to take a trip to the zoo as Tom said he's never been to a zoo before! That was my favourite day. we got to feed giraffes by hand, and neither of us had ever seen giraffes up close before, they were amazing. Also saw crocs, monkeys, elephants and various other animals thatwe couldn't name. Unfortunately much of the information was in thai so alot of the animasls were a mystery to us! i also forgot to mention on the trek we did some elephant trekking, which was great fun. Our elephant had a habit of eating everything in its path, including most of the trees! after our 5 day in chaing mai we headed back to bangkok overnight, spent a day killing time in bangkok and then caught the over night train to surat thani down ssouth. whilst in bangkok i got a few presents for Thomas' birthday. i bought a portable dvd player with prison break season 3 and heroes season 1 and 2. also picked up a docking station for his ipod. we also bought about 10 films to watch when we have nights in on the islands. so all in all a fun packed week for us both. im still not 100% which is frustratiung as its holding us both back, but im on new antibiotics which seem to be doing a good job.
we have made it down to ko phi phi which took some travelling and are both very very tired. Tom is out watching the rugby and im consoling myslef on the loss of my favourite bikini ( think i left it in chiang mai). Hopefully tomoro i will find a new one and treat myself (if its cheap!) we are looking to do some snorkelling too. hope all is well at home? once again i am feeling a little homesick but i think its because im not feeling well. Tom is still happy and probably making friends with fellow rubgy fans as i speak! hope to hear from everyone soon, and will write more regularly now.
love always, Thomas and Sarah x x x
