Moving on from Kakadu National Park we walked around Mamukala and Burdulba where we saw our very first wild Skippy the bush-kangaroo! There was this cute little family of them just bouncing along in the bush, very typically Oz! We walked around the park for a few hours, skirting round a billabong which had thousands of different types of birds and more than likely a few crocs hiding in there too. Next up was a boat cruise along the river to Edith Waterfalls, which was in some sort of dug-out canoe...in mucky green algae covered water LOVELY! Some people went swimming into the falls but I thought best to stay on the boat, clean and dry.
The following day we sped out on actual canoes along Kathering Gorge, which is an absolutely beautiful part of the Northern Territory. Me and Michelle paddled our hardest and made it to the end without falling in and without passing out! Our arms bloody hurt but we powered through and became muscle men from it haha! It was actually really peaceful floating along the gorge, taking pictures and 'paddle high 5-ing' when we did some fantastic canoeing!!! Off next was to another Aboriginal activity with a difference....we became artists for the afternoon learning from a professional. We were taught all the techniques of how to paint using their colours, brushes and in their style to create what I would call an absolute masterpiece! Even got to take it home, so I can show you it once i'm back. After boomerang throwing and a lovely BBQ cooked up by Wombat we headed over to the Matarnaka Thermal Pools for a bit of afternoon relaxation with what seemed like a bus loads of oldies - they were loving it! Finally the piece de la resistance of the day was our arrival at the Daly Waters Pub - best known for its role in our favourite book by Charlie Boorman, Long Way Round. The pub is covered inside with t-shirts, beer mats, photos, money and even underwear from people who have visited making their mark on the place. And in pride of place on the wall is Charlie Boorman's pink fluffy handcuffs he left when he was there on the same trip as us. We even found the Ozbus 1 t-shirt, it was like our god...we made it like them!!!
The next day we headed south towards Alice Springs, but along the way we saw some great sights.....we stopped off at the Wycliffe Wells roadhouse, which lives off some apparant UFO sightings back in the day. Aliens are everywhere, along with newspaper cuttings, photos and strange people working there who look strangely weird and alienish themselves! After a quick toilet stop there we suddenly looked out the window and there stood the Devil's Marbles. From the picture above you can probably tell these are rocks which look like marbles, but they are pretty cool as literally all the rocks have been eroded so circular and they stand on top of one another. Great for some pics of you standing on top of the world!!!! Further along the road we stopped at the Tropic of Capricorn until we arrived into Alice Springs. The one good thing to say about Alice Springs is the pub 'Bojangles'. They have webcams all around the place so you can text home and get your friends and family to look online and watch you drink. If they are feeling nice they can even buy you drinks and they shout your name out at the bar that you got freebies!!!! What else could you ask for...well family that would do it! Nobody seemed to be at a computer when I text :-( Before we headed for the next part of the Australian adventure, we had the morning in Alice Springs to wander round...well nothing! We did take a trip to the Royal Flying Doctors Museum which was fairly interesting but nothing to write home about...........
