The Wandering Rupa
The rafthouses were definately my faveourite time so far. The group got on to two long-tail boats from Koh Sok National Park. They were literally shacks floating on a huge river so water was the only way to get there. The boat I was on broke down half way there (well it would do wouldn't it!) but we made the best of it by opening yet another crate of Singah while we waited for the other half of the group to realised we hadn't made it and come looking for us - what larks eh Pip!
The rafthouses were a row of floating thatched huts that were linked together (and prevented from floating down-stream) by all sorts of make-shift and quesitonable support; ladders, bits of unused radio antena, string. There was a jetty in the middle and the food (and Singah )we got there was lovely. The group had really varied ages and nationalities so there was never a chance to get bored. We had days trecking in the forest and kayacking. Two Canadian guys in the group managed to get lost in theirs until after dark and there was lots of drama and intrigue while the boy's dad, the tour leader and a few Thai lads went looking for them in a long-tail with torches.
Both nights at the rafthouses were spent sprawled on the jetty until the early hours, drinking and telling stories and going for moon-lit swims - I couldn't have been further away from the rat-race if I tried!
