The Wandering Rupa
Helloooo
I've decided that motorbikes are the only way to travel!!! Emily, the girl from my hostel, and I blagged our way into renting two bikes for the day today and had a fantastic time. I've never been on a motorbike before - not even on the back as a nervous passenger - but I persuaded the shop that I had years of experience and off I went. Emily had done it before and patiently waited whilst I wobbled down the street after her at about 25 miles an hour. I nearly fell off going around my first corner but after 5 minutes we were cruising along quite happily at 40 miles+
We visited a batik centre and watched the women working for a while. We both bought a few souvenirs and headed off to a snake sanctuary but the poor things were being kept in such in-humane conditions (and yes, we were quite eager to get back on the bikes) we didn't stay long.
We had lunch in a local, completely non-tourist place at the roadside. It didn't occur to us at first but we started to notice that everybody in the place had stopped talking and was watching us eat. We had gone tearing up to this place on motorbikes in tiny shorts and tops and hadn't stopped to think that we were the only white people and the only women in there - surrounded by a load of elderly Muslim men. I'm amazed we didn't give anybody a heart attack!
Back on the bikes and we pretty-much toured the whole island at about 80 miles an hour - it was a really great day. I've left the hostel now. I have a ferry and an overnight bus to catch back to KL so I can get my plane to Oz in the morning. In all I'm going to be travelling for something like 29 hours so god knows what condition I'll be in when I write my next update.........
