I'm not a morning person at the best of times. But when I dragged my foggy head off the pillow one morning to see a shirtless, obese Italian man called Luigi mopping the floor of our room, I knew I had missed something... Sjane can explain: she was more awake for it.
"It was about 6am here; I stirred in my sleep cause I was thirsty. I reached out for my waterbottle that was on the floor and instead grabbed hold of the big display pillow I tossed off last night. The whole pillow was drenched! So I bounced up thinking "What the f***?!" and as my feet hit the ground they were covered in water. Water was EVERYWHERE. My big backpack, all our shoes, anything and everything sitting on the floor was drenched (fortunately no electronic devices!). I opened the door of our room to hear some of the other guests sweeping up water with a broom and dust bucket - scooping the water up. The whole place was flooded; an inch or two deep in every direction. Luigi and his mate (didn't catch his name - let's call him Mario for the sake of a good story) had a system going where one would push a wave of water at the other, and it would be caught in a dust pan and transferred to a bucket. Luigi insisted again and again that they would mop our room up for us, despite me offering to do it. In our room alone they scooped up 60L of water. Found out this arvo that they left the tap on all night and had accidentally flooded the whole place! That might explain their insistence on doing the clean up themselves. Luigi's wife even got a photograph of us all in pyjamas mid-mopping. Classic times!"
I thought we had left the craziness of hostel dorms behind us. Not so apparently! Never a dull moment on The 2015 Plan.
