A short stopover in Bruges promised all the cutesy appeal of a small canal-filled Belgian town one would expect. The plan was to spend the day strolling around in the sunshine, over little bridges and maybe sunning ourselves outside a cute cafe. For the first hour or two of our day there, that was exactly what was happening. Then the rain came. Again.
Sjane won't let me live down the fact that I keep jinxing the weather. Mother Nature hears me bragging about how lucky we've been with blue skies, and all of a sudden the rainclouds roll over and park right over Bruges. We headed to a pub for cover.
We had inadvertently found the oldest pub in Bruges (est. 1515 - 500 years old!). After a feed and some beers, the rain didn't look like letting up so we pulled out a tattered old chess set to while away a few hours. What followed was pretty much an afternoon of drinking beers and playing assorted board games (chess, a travel themed game called Discovering Europe and a code-breaker called Mastermind) in a couple of different bars around town. Very little of interest followed, unless you count Sjane sneakily removing a few of my chess pieces from the board whilst I was in the loo, or a blossoming romance between myself and Belgian beer. We learnt that Oporto in Portugal is famous for port wines, so... you know... a little relevance to travel! All I can say is that Bruges is lovely in the sunshine, and can be just as wonderful a spot when its rains.
