Next stop Phi Phi. Without question one of our favourite islands, not only is the whole island accessible by foot but there are no motorised vehicles, just carts and bicycles. A backpackers paradise!!! Emily & Abi managed to find a nice central guest house to relax in, Abi however was not so relaxed, an early night was on the cards in preparation for the imminent birthday celebrations. Meanwhile Lucas and Martin having engaged in a topical yet intellectual debate over one too many beers had left it too late to catch a ferry and all efforts to find a boat were in vain. Another night in Phuket Town for them.
The following morning Abi didn't wake up feeling any better and it was straight to the clinic before we had time to realise it was Emily's birthday. With Abi's life in the balance the two heroes of the storey were merrily making there way to Phi Phi with dead phones but occupied hands. The island was a sight to behold and the first steps upon the golden sand was a firm "welcome to paradise". Phones charged we were in contact and quickly booked into the same guest house. With Abi safe in then clinic it was party time! A cheeky Skype session, rooftop Mexican, beers by the sea and a few too many buckets, we had ourselves a birthday.
The following day we made the epic trek to long beach, not the best idea when we were all feeling a bit fragile but the white sand beach and crystal clear waters certainly made up for it. Just stunning. On our last day with Abi freshly released from the infirmary none the worse for wear we partook of a boat trip to the famous Maya Bay starting with a quick stop off at monkey beach. Less than gracious hosts the Monkeys in recent times have developed a less than positive impression of the intrepid explores upon their beach. Unfortunately for Emily their vitriol was aimed squarely at her being the first off the boat. A nice swift penetrating bite of the arm as followed by a scream and a picture taken by the ever heroic Lucas. That night we were back in hospital for a total of 8 intrusive injections and a further 5 to come over the course of the next month.
The buzz of the island was really seen when the sun disappeared beyond the horizon. Out come the fire pits, fire dancers, eager revellers and pissed observers. The parties were intense and lasted until dawn. An island that provided extremes, highs and lows, Phi Phi lived up to its reputation and left us with plenty of interesting stories and tired bodies.
