Having experienced the Cambodian monsoon in full flight the previous day getting out of bed at 4 am with rain tapping on the tin roof above us was not easy. The temples of Angkor were are destination and we approached by tuk tuk in the dead of night. First stop sunrise at Angkor Wat.
South East Asia being South East Asia we were sent unaided by man or light into a pitch black temple. Surrounded by a moat and a boundary wall 3.6 km round, we were bound to get into trouble. Exploring the temple in the dark was an amazing experience. You could easily imagine yourself as an Indiana Jones style tomb raider. Guided by our poor night vision and some poor light from our phones we explored at length the majestic, undulating and somewhat spooky temples. With a lack of supervision and as newly appointed tomb raiders we ignored the no entry signs and scrabbled of the gate barring the entrance, we were able to climb or more aptly crawl up the steep steps of the highest temple and enjoy a panoramic view. As light fell on the temple, so are positions were reviled. The guards who discovered our misdemeanour were courteous with our removal.
Luckily their timing was impeccable and we were outside just in time for sunrise. The weather gods had heard our prayers, stood side by side with a thousand other newly arrived tourists in ankle deep flooded fields we were treated to a magnificent show from Mother Nature and we even managed to take one or two National Geographic worthy pictures!
We spent the rest of the day running around temple after temple like Lara Croft ignoring all no entry signs and climbing to our hearts content. 8th wonder of the world? Yeah it's up there...
