8am
We woke up early after a really good nights sleep and after breakfast we taken by our guide to meet our driver on the outskirts of the city, as he couldn't drive in as they restrict cars depending on number plates from entering the city on certain days! We climbed into our range rover and headed off along the pot hole strewn roads towards the national park. The city seems to be extending out but the edges look like slums, and not very inviting! Most of the people in this area have been there since the freezing weather forced them off their farms in the winter of 1999.
We passed a family sat on roadside with a camel, 3 eagles and a massive vulture! We got out to take pics and before you could say boo, Sally had one perched on her arm! They then gave me one gorgeous eagle to hold, but as a man I was obviously strong enough to hold the biggest vulture, which I could only hold by holding my vulture arm with my other arm. It looked me in the eye, and all I could think about was the Scouse vultures in The Jungle Book (what do you wanna do? I dunno what do you wanna do?). One of the best 5 minutes of my life so far, and it only cost us 7000 Mongolian turgreks (£3.50)!
We carried on up and down valleys until we reached the Ger which is at the bottom of a cliff face in a valley, amongst farmers and their cows but just away from them, next to the family that own them. 3 generations of women including the cutest little girl.
The toilet is a shed, which has a 3 foot hole in floor, and below a 10ft deep pit for you to aim into! Mingy but awesome! Sally not as impressed as it as I was!!!
1pm
I am typing this sitting outside our Ger in the valleys of the Terelj National Park, and it is just amazing! Our Ger is big enough to sleep four people but it's just for us! They are treating us because we are on our honeymoon! Our guide and driver have their own Ger next door, and they have just cooked us a lovely lunch of omelette, meat and salad. We went for a walk up the hill and saw more eagles soaring above, and lots of gofers! So cool!!
4pm
After launch we headed to the monastery on the side of the valley, which was beautiful and scary in equal measures! They had gruesome depictions of what would happen in hell (see photo album) and the little caretaker man really enjoyed pretending to be a dog with his hand and bite our asses!
We passed by turtle rock on the way back, which is just incredible, how the top rock stays where it is (it's the size of two houses!) I have no idea!
9pm
It's pitch black and freezing outside, but we are lovely and warm in our Ger having just watched an old lady milk a cow, and then tucked in to spaghetti bolognese (us, not the old lady!).
The Ger, if you haven't seen one before, is a large round canvas tent, built around a giant wooden cartwheel type structure for the ceiling. We had a sneak peak into the family Ger next door and it is more decorated and has mod cons, but ours is quite basic, almost like a youth hostel, just more spiders! It's lovely though! And had a lightbulb and plug socket to charge our camera!!
Tomorrow we are up at 7am, for breakfast, leaving at 8am to head to see the wild horses in Khustai National Park, where we will be staying with a nomadic family! Should be interesting!!!! We will also be riding half wild half tame horses as well...!
Night all!!
Dan and Sally xx
