Another early rise and taxi back to the airport to head down to the island of Phuket and more specifically Kata, where we had stayed a couple of years ago. That time primarily because it's the main area for surfing in Thailand, but as this time it's the high season it was flat as a pancake. But we had decided to stay in a hotel with quite possibly the best swimming pool we have ever witnessed, the pool was about 150m in length and snaked its way around the footprint of the hotel. The inventory for the Thailand leg of our trip was simple, to relax, ahead of the real trip around Oz, and in Kata that is simply what we did, after witnessing a 3 hour monsoon! Having visited previously it's was very interesting to see how the town has changed and developed. Construction is continually ongoing and a multitude of new hotels and commercial outlets have sprung up in seemingly no time at all. But the centre of the town is very much the same and memories of the sights and sounds came flooding back. Once again the food was great and the much awaited first Massuman curry was a success it was still and stunning as it is in my memory. We were to be in Kata for the turn of the Chinese New Year, the year of the Dragon. And as way of celebrating they do like their fireworks, at one point Rach did question if one of them was a bomb, at the time I laughed at her but I wasn't convinced it wasn't.
So after the civilised setting of Kata it was time to move on to Koh Phi Phi, again having been before but we were not ready for what we actually experienced.
