24 hours of travel
Kampong Ayer Gemuruh, Singapore
Day One (and two/three?)
Though I wrote this a day or two ago, and I'm currently sitting comfortably in New Zealand I thought it would still be nice to share as much of my journey as possible.
I'm currently sitting by a nice, large window with blinding sunlight and tarmac outside. Singapore airport is always an experience, especially when one travels by themselves. In the half hour I've been here so far I've spent far too much money on souvenirs, lost my cell phone, had a small mental breakdown, found my phone and was asked by two Singaporean stewards for my number. The flights so far have been nice. The flight from Dubai to Singapore was particularly lavish. I walked past the stairs to the first class on my way to my seat. Stairs, inlaid with polished wood. The cabin for the common folk, such as myself, was also a sight, very large and spacious, with a high ceiling and big touch screens for movie watching or anything else that might take ones fancy. As you can probably imagine this meant lots of movies and not so much work on the two assignments I still need to finish. The stopover in Dubai, however, was an… adventure. I had a drink with some of the passengers from my first flight, which was lovely: an Indian girl from America, an Indonesian girl studying in Germany, and a Dutch man living in Sri-Lanka with his wife and children. Unfortunately this made my timing situation a little less smooth than hoped. I was told in Dusseldorf that I would need to check in for my connection from Singapore to Auckland in Dubai. This led me to wild goose chase in and out of (a very very fancy) security to different service desks around the terminal. Having finally located the correct one they told me that it was not possible to check in there for the flight, and that I would need to wait till Singapore. So there I was, puffing and sweaty, only to be told the whole excursion was pointless. And that my flight was boarding. All that said and done, I did make the final boarding call and was safely underway, if not a little put out.
My internal biological clock is struggling somewhat with the adjustments of time. I have actually lost any sense of what the time is in Europe. But other than a few hectic moments I am enjoying everything. It's a wonderful experience to really have done it all by myself, and to know that is what I will be doing for the next few months. I'm also already starting to plot side trips I wish to make while in Singapore. Malaysia, Indonesia, Burma- as far as I'm concerned anything is within reach!
