The sun has finally got his hat on!
Have had a lovely few days in pretty Mui Ne; it's been a little holiday within the holiday after the ordeal of all the rain, floods and drenched backpacks over the past couple of weeks.
Mui Ne started off as a fishing village; situated on the South Eastern coast of Vietnam it is famous for fresh seafood, and for being the key producer of fish sauce (you can imagine the aroma...). Our resort had its own stretch of gorgeous beach, with bright white sand that squeaks when you walk on it, and crashing blue waves with a kitesurfing school on the sand (no, I didn't try it, I was far too busy sunbathing).
Every day has begun with a sunbathe, and I've been steadily working my way through every photocopied cheap book I can find from the street peddlers! Yesterday Cords, Kelly, Joe and I hired a jeep (which looked like a war relic) out to Fairy Creek, the red sand dunes, then on to the white dunes to try out sandboarding. It sounds more high-tech than it was; we hired slabs of thin plastic sheeting and hurtled ourselves down dunes. Mostly we went fairly slowly until we worked out that on your front is best, but we got VERY sandy and Cords ended up in the quite pongy pond at the bottom.
I seem to be in the wars a bit at the moment; am sporting a nasty burn on my knee from the plastic board, and about 50 very itchy bites from the sandflies (ouch!!).
The food has been amazing - two nights in a row we went to an open-air seafront restarant called Bo Ke, sampling shrimp, mussels, clams, scallops and even a huge delicious lobster! Lobster here is so fresh, but crucially also cheap - Cords and I shared one and it worked out to about £14 between the two of us. A bargain!
Lots of photos of silly and tipsy dancing to accompany this post, which sums up this section of the trip - no cultural excursions, just lots of sun, sand and cheap cocktails!
Next stop, Saigon.
