Gatecrashed a wedding last night..
We headed out with the group we did the Gibbon Experience with and had a nice dinner, a few drinks... then decided to see if we could find some nightlife in this tiny (and lets face it, dull) town. Headed up the road to the Mekong River we heard music and singing. Thinking we'd happened upon a karaoke bar, Canadian Bill and I quickly agreed on the perfect song - 'Don't you want me baby'. When you see photos of Bill you'll realise why this was so funny.
Our excited little troupe headed towards what we thought was a bar, and were warmly greeted by the 40 or so assembled Laos people. They were so nice and friendly, and got really excited that we were joining them. Only then did we realise we were at a wedding reception! Food and drink were piled high on the tables, the bride looked radiant and the guests were hammered. Somewhat bemused, we sat down and immediately had drinks thrust into our hands, as we were instruced that in Laos at a wedding you "drink, then dance". No big cultural differences there then. It was hilarious! I got involved with learning a traditional dance routine, the boys we were with were literally groped, flung across the dancefloor and adored by the female guests, and the men just wanted to have their photo taken with us. We were the guests of honour!
Photos to follow soon, I promise. Headed back to Luang Prabang on an overnight bus (joy) tonight then we're off to Vietnam in a couple of days. Will try to get the uploading sorted before then.
