Now we are approaching our last night in Singapore we have begun to see past the sweat and the grease that we first saw. We have all been pleasantly surprised by the food ($4 for a meal!), the hostel and Singapore in general.
On the 19th we woke up early due to jet lag and intense humidity. Surprisingly it rained most of the day, but we still stuck to our original plan. We went to 'Wild Wild Wet'; a water park which we found to be completely deserted. However, we still managed to have a fantastic time, with particular reference to the painful waterfall occuring every 5/10 minutes...damaging ears, eyes and private parts.
Following our trip to the waterpark, we caught the Metro and a bus to a nature reserve in the middle of Singapore. After this we then walked to Bukit Timah (a small forest containing monkies and the highest point in Singapore (263 meters). After climbing to the top (sadly no monkies were seen) we headed back to the hostel.
Saturday night was boogy night, as we all took part in a local pub crawl. The night began with a bus journey filled with horrific tales of our rep/crook Alex and a very suspicious man, now known as Freddy Free drinks/Danny Date rape. A pub called 'Pardis' was the first destination of the night and also our first experience of 'Pikachu', a peculiar man in a blue t shirt carrying a P.E bag most probably filled with even more peculiar items. After the first few pubs, we really started to take notice of the ever growing drinks prices(plateauing at around $16 dollars for a beer and $450 for a bottle of vodka), thank god for Freddie Free drinks; the 'yet to be' terrifying man who had so far spent his time alone, gradually dirnking himself to a climax (not an orgasm). He basically just bought us several pitchers of varying drinks (coke, vodka, rum, rohypnol etc).
Our final attempt to escape led to us being ushered into another 'bar'. As we entered and heard the door close, several things happened at once. Sam was punched in the face, Mike suddenly found a girl right behind him and a voice whispered in Pip's ear 'Tell your friend to choose his favourite hooker'. Needless to say, we got out of there asap. We never did see those hookers nor Freddy again.
Today we got up slightly later, due to last nights excitement, but were still able to get away fairly early.
We headed out to Sentosa Island, somewhere we had heard a lot of different things about so we were unsure what we'd find.
On arrival, concern rippled through the group, as it appeared that we had come to the world's worst theme park with lots of expensive restraunts and an even more expensive Universal Studios, but with no rides. However upon reaching the south of the island, and discovering the man-made beaches, things got better. Whilst the view was fairly hideous with only oil tankers to look at and the sea very murky because of this, we all got in the water and had a laugh. We went to the seccond beach which was considrably better than the last one and the sun nearly came out! It would seem both Pip and sam are local celerities as they were stopped on two diffrent occasions to have their pictures taken. Well celebrities, or they both looked completely ridiculous.
We left in the afternoon and headed to Chinatown to try and find Luke a lucky cat thingy. We got the cat, and went back to the hostel. Then Mike, Sam and Pip got the bus up to nearly the top of the island, right out in the sticks to visit the Kranji War Memorial, in the hope of finding the grave of a friends great-grandfather. We arrived just as it was shutting and luckily the guard kindly gave us 30 minutes to look. We spent the following 29 minutes running up and down searching for this name, amongst 5000 other graves (a humbling sight, especially as this was a fairly small memorial, compared to those in France and Belgium). Then in the last minute, when all hope was lost and we were accepting failure, Sam found the grave and we were able to get photos and return back to the hostel.
Our last night was spent in the same way as the previous two were, in the Hawker stalls, eating the delicious and cheap food Little India was able to offer.
